Graham Nash first came to the United States as part of the British Invasion with his band The Hollies, which got its start at the same time as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and shared bills with both bands in England. But Nash later helped to define a kind of West Coast sound, singing harmonies as part of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Nash wrote some of the most famous songs by the powerhouse group (who would add Neil Young to its roster in 1969), including "Our House," "Teach Your Children" and "Marrakesh Express."

In a new memoir called Wild Tales: A Rock n Roll Life, Nash touches on those memories and many others. He recently spoke with Fresh Air's Terry Gross, just a few hours before Crosby, Stills & Nash performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Interview Highlights

On the influence of The Everly Brothers' harmonies

"I was about 15 years old; Allan [Clarke, founding member of The Hollies] and I were attending a catholic schoolgirls' dance on a Saturday evening. I remember going down the stairs and giving the young lady our tickets. 'You Send Me' by Sam Cooke had just stopped playing, and of course that was a slow dance where every boy and girl were feeling each other up and getting close and the teachers were trying to separate them. So, the song finished and the ballroom floor cleared, and Allan and I saw a friend across the way that we both wanted. And we got halfway across the floor and 'Bye Bye Love' by The Everly Brothers came on — and it stopped us in our tracks. We sang together, so we knew what two-part harmony was, but this sounded so unbelievably beautiful. They're brothers, of course, and they're from Kentucky and have these beautiful accents. They could harmonize unbelievably, very much like The Louvin Brothers, who they probably learned from. And ever since that day, I decided that whatever music I was going to make in the future, I wanted it to affect people the same way The Everly Brothers' music affected me on that Saturday night."

On Buddy Holly's ordinary charm

"Buddy Holly was one of us. He was an ordinary-looking kid, wore big thick glasses. He wasn't shakin' his hips and being sexy — he was actually one of us. We could be Buddy Holly. It was very hard to be Elvis; only Elvis was Elvis. But with Buddy Holly, he was one of us and he touched our hearts in a very simple way. What a lot of people don't realize is that the kid only recorded for less than two years before he was tragically killed with the Big Bopper and Richie Valens ... He was very dear to us. His music was very simple: Everybody could play it if you knew three chords. It had great energy, great simplicity. I often wonder what Buddy Holly would be doing with today's technology."

On his early infatuation with America

"Coming to America was amazing to me. The phone rang exactly as it did in John Wayne movies. You could get a real hamburger — because in England at the time there were only these things called 'wimpy burgers,' and they were like shoe leather. You could get food brought in! Unheard of in England. I loved America from the moment I set foot on it, I really did. When we actually got a chance to go and fly to Los Angeles I climbed the nearest palm tree and I told Allan Clarke that there was no way I was going back."

On how marijuana use changed his song-writing style

"I think alcohol is a depressive drug, whereas marijuana is not. I never got depressed when I smoked dope at all; it was a joyful experience. I'm not condoning my drug use. ... I go into great detail in the book about Crosby's spiraling down into cocaine madness, but at that time, smoking dope wasn't that big of a deal. Quite frankly, I loved it. It expanded my mind, it made me think about more profound issues. The Hollies were great at creating a two-and-a-half-minute pop song, to be played right before the news. ... In hanging out with David [Crosby] and Stephen [Stills] and Neil [Young] and Joni [Mitchell], I began to realize that you could write catchy melodies that would attract people but you could talk about real things. I began to change the way I wrote songs. I was trained to write good pop songs, and I took that sensibility and talked about what I considered to be deeper, more profound subjects."

On how adding Neil Young changed Crosby, Stills & Nash

"It's more difficult to sing four-part [harmonies]; you've got to start shifting parts around and stuff. Neil brings a darker edge to our music, and I don't mean that in a negative way. ... It's more intense. That first album of Crosby, Stills & Nash is kind of summery: lots of palm trees in it feeling, a cool-breeze-through-the-canyons kind of music. Actually, Jimi Hendrix, when asked what he thought of Crosby, Stills & Nash, looked at the interviewer and said, 'That's Western sky music.' And I thought, 'Wow. That's brilliant.' The point is that Neil brings a different kind of musical intensity to the band, and the music of Crosby, Stills & Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is very, very different."

Goodbye, tracking cookies? Don't celebrate just yet

October 11, 2013

Is there something in the water? First Google, now Microsoft, is rumored to be working on technologies to replace tracking cookies for online advertising.

The secrecy surrounding these projects is no big deal, but what's bound to be a big deal is if they replace a well-known  (if a widely hated) system with a complete unknown.

Word about Google's "AdID" technology started circulating back in September, when USA Today reported about "an anonymous identifier for advertising ... that would replace third-party cookies" for the sake of end-user ad-tracking. The system is allegedly intended to give consumers "more privacy and control over how they browse the Web," and would be used with advertisers that have "agreed to basic guidelines" -- although it's not clear if those guidelines are designed to better favor consumers or advertisers.

USA Today's anonymous source within Google couldn't give more details, in part because the proposal was soon slated to be circulated amongst "industry participants, government bodies and consumer groups."

Speculation has since raged about what Google is planning and to what end. Some believe Google may be trying to follow the same model Apple created for iOS via its iAd platform -- the latter of which attracted unwanted attention from U.S. regulatory agencies back in 2010 (and which may well have been instrumental in allowing Google to purchase AdMob in the same timeframe).

When Google was pressed for more details, a "Google spokesperson" (according to multiple outlets) would only reply: "We believe that technological enhancements can improve users' security while ensuring the Web remains economically viable. We and others have a number of concepts in this area, but they're all at very early stages."

Those two words, "and others", might well have been a hedge, but perhaps Google knew something that everyone else has just now gotten wind of as well.

Berlin museum seeks return of ancient gold tablet

A renowned Berlin antiquities museum is trying to get back an ancient gold tablet excavated from an Assyrian temple that a Holocaust survivor somehow obtained after World War II.

Who gets it is up to New York's top court, which is set to hear arguments Tuesday.

The 9.5-gram tablet, about the size of a credit card, was excavated a century ago by German archaeologists from the Ishtar Temple in what is now northern Iraq. It went on display in Berlin in 1934, was put in storage as the war began and later disappeared.

Riven Flamenbaum brought it to the U.S. after surviving the Auschwitz concentration camp and settling on Long Island. Family lore says he had traded two packs of cigarettes to a Russian soldier for the tablet in the chaotic days at the end of the war.

Flamenbaum's family is trying to keep the 3,200-year-old relic, arguing the museum forfeited any claim to ownership by waiting 60 years to seek its return.

Lawyers for the Vorderasiatisches Museum, a branch of the Pergamon Museum, said it didn't know Flamenbaum had the tablet until 2006, three years after he died.

Steven Schlesinger, the lawyer representing the estate, said any claim is complicated by the passage of so much time and Flamenbaum's death. He said he believes Flamenbaum was trading Red Cross packages and anything else he could get for silver and gold.

The tablet is now in a safe deposit box in New York. One recent estimate put its value at $10 million, he said, and the family wants to donate it to the Holocaust Museum in Washington.

Lower courts were split on the decision, leading to the latest appeal.

According to court documents, the tablet dates to 1243 to 1207 B.C., the reign of King Tukulti-Ninurta I of Assyria. Placed in the foundation of the temple of a fertility goddess, its 21 lines call on those who find the temple to honor the king's name.

The tablet was excavated by German archaeologists from about 1908 to 1914 in what was then the Ottoman Empire, with Germany giving half the found antiquities to Istanbul, Raymond Dowd, the museum's lawyer, said. The modern state of Iraq has declined to claim it, he said.

In 1945, the Berlin museum's premises was overrun, with many items taken by Russia, others by German troops and some pilfered by people who took shelter in the museum, Dowd said. The museum director was not in a position to say who took it, only that it disappeared.

Report: NSA collecting millions of contact lists

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Security Agency has been sifting through millions of contact lists from personal email and instant messaging accounts around the world — including those of Americans — in its effort to find possible links to terrorism or other criminal activity, according to a published report.

The Washington Post reported late Monday that the spy agency intercepts hundreds of thousands of email address books every day from private accounts on Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook and Hotmail that move though global data links. The NSA also collects about a half million buddy lists from live chat services and email accounts.

The Post said it learned about the collection tactics from secret documents provided by NSA leaker Edward Snowden and confirmed by senior intelligence officials. It was the latest revelation of the spy agency's practices to be disclosed by Snowden, the former NSA systems analyst who fled the U.S. and now resides in Russia.

The newspaper said the NSA analyzes the contacts to map relationships and connections among various foreign intelligence targets. During a typical day last year, the NSA's Special Source Operations branch collected more than 440,000 email address books, the Post said. That would correspond to a rate of more than 250 million a year.

A spokesman for the national intelligence director's office, which oversees the NSA, told the Post that the agency was seeking intelligence on valid targets and was not interested in personal information from ordinary Americans.

Spokesman Shawn Turner said the NSA was guided by rules that require the agency to "minimize the acquisition, use and dissemination" of information that identifies U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

While the collection was taking place overseas, the Post said it encompassed the contact lists of many American users. The spy agency obtains the contact lists through secret arrangements with foreign telecommunications companies or other services that control Internet traffic, the Post reported.

Earlier this year, Snowden gave documents to the Post and Britain's Guardian newspaper disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens.

The collection of contact lists in bulk would be illegal if done in the United States, but the Post said the agency can get around that restriction by intercepting lists from access points around the world.

The newspaper quoted a senior intelligence official as saying NSA analysts may not search or distribute information from the contacts database unless they can "make the case that something in there is a valid foreign intelligence target in and of itself."

Commenting on the Post story, Alex Abdo, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, said in an emailed statement: "This revelation further confirms that the NSA has relied on the pretense of 'foreign intelligence gathering' to sweep up an extraordinary amount of information about everyday Americans. The NSA's indiscriminate collection of information about innocent people can't be justified on security grounds, and it presents a serious threat to civil liberties."

Indian officials are reporting far fewer casualties than had been feared when the large and powerful cyclone Phailin struck the country's east coast Saturday. But the storm, which forced the evacuation of nearly 1 million people, has left flooding and destruction in its path.

One day after the storm struck the states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh with winds of at least 125 mph, crews are working to clear fallen trees off roads and to open railway lines. And officials were voicing relief that the cyclone didn't approach the devastation brought by a 1999 "supercyclone" that killed some 10,000 people in the same area.

Phailin has been blamed for 17 deaths, many caused by falling tree branches and collapsed houses. On Sunday, National Disaster Management Authority Marri Shashidhar Reddy said the mass evacuation had been effective. And he criticized international groups that had warned of more damage and stronger winds.

"After the exaggerated manner international agencies tried to portray it [the cyclone and disaster], the NDMA has done an excellent job," he said, according to Agence France-Presse.

The fact that this year's storm didn't exact such a staggering human toll as in 1999 is due to advances in India, according to Victor Mallet, the South Asia bureau chief for The Financial Times.

"Many more people have mobile phones. In the old days, it was just very hard to make contact with remote areas by landline, and now almost everybody has a mobile phone," Mallet tells NPR's Rachel Martin on today's Weekend Edition.

"So, I think that the better infrastructure plus the predictions that the storm was coming and the preparations that were made meant that the human damage, at least, was not as severe as it was back then," he says.

While India's chief weather agency has a website, it also used Facebook to send alerts about the cyclone. Visitors to the agency's site on Saturday found that its servers seemed to be overwhelmed — but the alerts were appearing on Facebook, making social media efforts even more vital.

The storm has left cars and trucks, trees and utility poles strewn across streets. Thousands of people who were displaced by the cyclone remain in temporary housing. The storm also destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops, officials say.

In Orissa, the state's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik says that recovering from the strike will be a "big challenge," reports NDTV.

What Do You Call Home?

“ It's only by stepping out of your life and the world, that you can see what you most deeply care about and find a home.

Part 4 of the TED Radio Hour episode Identities.

About Pico Iyer's TEDTalk

Country and culture used to serve as the cornerstones of identity, but what does "home" mean to someone who comes from many places? Writer Pico Iyer talks about the meaning of home in a world where the old boundaries of nation-states no longer apply.

About Pico Iyer

Acclaimed writer Pico Iyer began his career documenting a neglected aspect of travel — the disconnect between local tradition and imported global pop culture.

Since then, he has written a dozen books including topics such as the cultural consequences of isolation, whether writing about the exiled spiritual leaders of Tibet or the embargoed society of Cuba.

Iyer's latest focus is on how travel can help us regain our sense of stillness and focus in a world where our devices and digital networks increasing distract us?

He says "Almost everybody I know has this sense of overdosing on information ... Nearly everybody I know does something to try to remove herself to clear her head and to have enough time and space to think. ... All of us instinctively feel that something inside us is crying out for more spaciousness and stillness."

Saudi Arabia expels Syrian consulate workers

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it had expelled three people working at Syria's consulate in Jeddah, a new sign of ill feeling between the countries as Riyadh backs rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's government in Damascus.

"The steps were taken based on the public interest as their conduct ... was incompatible with the consular duties associated with their work," said a Foreign Ministry statement carried by state media, without giving further details.

The conservative Islamic kingdom, which this week is hosting Islam's annual haj pilgrimage in Mecca, closed its embassy in Damascus in March, a month after expelling Syria's ambassador to Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has only granted haj visas to Syrians applying at consulates in neighboring countries, instead of working with the government in Damascus to allocate visas to pilgrims.

Riyadh has led Arab efforts to isolate Assad's government, condemning its violent suppression of the uprising in August last year before orchestrating Arab League moves to impose sanctions.

It has supported the rebels with money and logistics and called for them to be armed.

Syria and its ally Shi'ite Muslim Iran have accused Saudi Arabia and other Sunni states in the region of fuelling the bloodshed by their backing of the rebels.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are incredibly tiny devices, often built on the scale of millionths of a meter. Conventional MEMS structures tend to be made out of silicon-based materials familiar to the micro-electronics industry, but this ignores a suite of useful materials such as other semiconductors, ceramics, and metals. By using a variety of materials not commonly associated with MEMS technology, a team from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah has created stronger microstructures that can form precise, tall and narrow 3-D shapes characteristics that were never before possible in MEMS. The researchers will present their latest findings at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.

To break the MEMS materials barrier, the researchers devised a new production process called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M). It uses patterned, vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays called forests as a 3-D microfabrication scaffold. With this scaffold, the researchers can create precise, tall and fine-featured microstructures. But the forests are extremely fragile. To make them hardier the team replaced the air spaces between the carbon nanotubes with a filler material by atomistic deposition.

The team has used their new CNT-M framework to fabricate metal components from tungsten, molybdenum and nickel. These metals provide desirable properties for MEMS applications and components, including high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperatures, resistance to corrosion, low thermal expansion and hardness.

The BYU team's advances open the door for manipulating matter in novel ways that optimize efficiency, performance and cost across a range of fields, including medicine, imaging, computing, materials synthesis, chemical synthesis, and printing. Most biological and biomedical processes occur at the nanoscale. Developing models and templates at this scale enables scientists to interact with, control and leverage the unusual physical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of materials in naturally tiny systems.

Already, the BYU researchers have successfully used their new technique to make chemical detection devices that can validate chemical reactions during pharmaceutical production. Team member Robert C. Davis, PhD , imagines that one day CNT-M might even play a role in devising new longer-lasting batteries.

Cybersecurity chief: Attacks on US banks tough to pin down

Cybersecurity getting increased attention from US government after a wave of Internet attacks on US banks. Pentagon blames Iran, but cybersecurity expert Gil Shwed says they could come from any developed country.

Gil Shwed is the co-founder and CEO of?Check Point Software Technologies.?Many recognize him and the company's other co-founder, Marius Nacht, as the world's pioneers in cyber-security. Shwed developed his expertise designing systems for an elite technology unit in the Israel Defense Forces years before the internet became a daily part of our lives.

?Shwed said today "Iran is definitely capable of launching these kinds of attacks but so is just about any other developed country."

?In the last several weeks reports have surfaced that several major American banks have been hit by a wave of Internet-based attacks slowing down or temporarily cutting off service.? Officials at the Pentagon were the first to?point the finger at the government of Iran. Shwed agrees it is possible Iran is to blame but cautions it's very difficult to tell where attacks come from because they can be diverted over and over to cover up the actual source.

?Without admitting guilt, Iranian officials have boasted about their increasing capability to carry out such attacks.

?While the Islamic Republic of Iran is widely blamed, a group calling itself the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters Group has claimed responsibility. Their name comes from a Muslim leader that directed waves of murderous attacks targeting Jews living in the Middle East in the 1920s and 1930s.? The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters dubbed their internet attacks "Operation Ababil" (Ababil is Farsi for swallow ? the Iranian government also has a fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles by the same name).

?In a statement filed on the internet late Tuesday night the group said, "Operation Ababil is retaliation in response of the organized insulting to the Prophet of Islam done by some arrogant western governments." The statement then again took credit for attacks on several American banks and threatened to carry out more.

On Wednesday, a New York Times report said Iranian hackers were also able to break into the?computer system of oil giant Saudi Aramco?earlier this year and wipe out almost three quarters of the data saved on the company's servers.

?There are signs the U.S. Government is starting to take these threats more seriously. Earlier this month Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta?sounded the alarm?on the nation's cyber-security saying "an aggressor nation or extremist group could gain control of critical switches and derail passenger trains, or trains loaded with lethal chemical. They could contaminate the water supply in major cities, or shut down the power grid across large parts of the country... a cyber-Pearl Harbor that would cause physical destruction and loss of life, paralyze and shock the nation, and create a profound new sense of vulnerability.''

Shwed echoed the Secretary of Defense's comments saying "the risk is absolutely there. But it isn't just government and infrastructure agencies that need to be on guard.? Every individual with a computer is at risk. These organizations, wherever they are, can infect tens of
thousands or even millions of computers."

Shwed added keeping your company or your individual computer or mobile device's security software updated is essential.

Despite the recent wave of cyber-attacks Check Point's stock has taken a hit in the last six months, it's down about 30 percent. Shwed blames the drop in large part to concerns over the European slowdown and the impact that will have on growth. But he optimistically says "the company is doing well whether profits increase 20 percent or decrease 20 percent." He also noted despite the recent downturn, shares are up almost 35 percent over the last three years.

Powell standing by Obama in 2012 presidential race

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a longtime Republican, is sticking with President Barack Obama in this year's election.

He told CBS' "This Morning" he respects fellow Republican Mitt Romney but thinks he's been vague on many issues.

Powell said the president got the United States out of Iraq, has laid out a plan for leaving Afghanistan "and didn't get us into any new wars."

He praised Obama's economic performance, saying, while difficult choices are ahead on taxes, spending and budgetary policies, "steadily, I think we've begun to come out of the dive and we're gaining altitude."

Obama later called Powell to thank him.

Powell, a retired general, was also a White House national security adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Powell says he's still a Republican.

Big jump in young adults moving out of state

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Young adults are making big moves in the fledgling economic recovery, leaving college towns and parents' homes and heading out of state at the highest rate since the height of the housing boom.

New census data offer a detailed look at U.S. migration, which fell to a record low in early 2011.

The latest numbers show that adults ages 25-29 had the biggest gain in interstate migration in 13 years. They are striking out on their own to test the job market in such urban, high-tech meccas as Washington, D.C.; Denver; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and Austin, Texas.

In contrast, groups that showed some of the most movement in the housing boom that peaked in 2005 ? working professionals, families and would-be retirees ? are still mostly locked in place.

LA ID Card For Immigrants Would Give Access To ATM, City Services

LOS ANGELES -- Immigrants would get access to banking services in Los Angeles under a proposal by the mayor that would create an official city photo identification card that could also be used as a prepaid ATM card for their private bank account.

"It will be an official ID," Villaraigosa told the newspaper. "It will be as strong an effort as San Francisco's."

An estimated 4.3 million immigrants live in LA.

Supporters say helping immigrants open bank accounts could reduce crime because fewer people would have to carry cash. An official city ID would also make it easier for many residents to obtain city services and identify themselves to law enforcement officials, they argue.

But critics say the plan is an accommodation to immigrants who are in the country illegally.

"Los Angeles is making it easier for people who have violated federal immigration laws to live in the city," said Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a group critical of illegal immigration.

A City Council committee will discuss the ID card proposal on Tuesday, the Times said.

Card applicants would have to meet "strict" criteria, the mayor's office told the newspaper. The card, which officials say would look like a student ID, would include a photo, street address, date of birth, hair and eye color, height and weight. Law enforcement agencies could choose whether to recognize the card, and it would not substitute for a driver's license, the mayor's office said.

The city would hire an outside vendor who would charge applicants between $10 and $20 to obtain a card, and a few dollars a month for the debit service, which would be optional, the Times said.

Thousands of poor and elderly legal residents who don't have a driver's license or other identification would benefit from the program, the mayor's office told the newspaper.

Personal Development Advice That Will Improve Your Health ...

Self improvement is an area in which there is much to learn. Collecting this knowledge will help you improve yourself. One of the most effective approaches to enriching your life through self improvement is to become more educated on the topics you need improvement in and put that information into practice.

Your body?s level of health is reflected in your mental health. It is imperative to eat a well-balanced diet, and to get some form of exercise every day. Keep in mind that a healthy body and mind go well together.

TIP! To be an effective leader, you must combine humility with power. A leader guides people in the right direction but understands how to serve their employee?s needs.

Don?t get cocky. Everyone is a part of the world?s puzzle. You still have so much to learn and discover. Keep this in mind and seize the chance to learn something new whenever you can. When you go into something with a unbiased mind, you can learn a lot from people.

To achieve success, list personal development goals that are broken down into specifics. By having specific goals in your mind, you?ll have a greater ability in breaking the path into doable pieces in order to accomplish the goal. This assists you in overcoming difficult tasks and enjoying quicker success.

Usually what brings your happy mood down is stress. When we have to deal with stress, it takes its toll on the body in a physical and mental sense. Letting go of stress can be the key to better thinking and meeting our goals with clear purpose and calm intent. Schedule in relaxation times throughout the day, clearing your mind in a peaceful setting. Taking the time to renew your center will help you to find peace within yourself.

TIP! Everyone should strive to be the best that they can be. Let your passions guide you.

Do not give any situation more thought, or attention than it deserves. Analyze your situation with care and manage stress. Mistakes can be fixed, and life will go on. Look at what you?ve got instead of focusing on what you lost.

Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. This attitude will help you get started on your journey to improve yourself. If you fail to notice the difference between your current state and your desired state, you will never reach self-actualization.

You should listen far more than you should speak. This goes double for personal development. Listen to your thoughts and learn to recognize your desires. If you don?t, you won?t understand your needs and that can make better yourself nearly impossible.

TIP! A new trait that has recently come about is called sexual capitol. Right now, it is being research and looked at as important to personal development.

You need to be both modest and wise to get ahead. Try to learn from choices you make in your every day life. Be sure to notice what things you can change and what you can not change and how those affect the outcome of your choices. If you have humility, it will be easier for you to understand your limits. The wisdom you have learned from the past will help you make better decisions, with better outcomes, in the future!

Improve your life by taking on the habits that have brought success to others. Begin by identifying a few basic behaviors, then focus on making the necessary improvements one step at a time until they become fully integrated into your daily life. New habits are developed over approximately twenty-one days so a little patience will go a long way when you are improving your habits.

Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. This is very hard for many people to do. In order to change problems you are having, you must identify what they are. Removing obstacles in your life can help you get a clearer picture of what?s to come.

TIP! Exercise is for all people, not just someone looking to lose weight. There are many physiological benefits associate with exercise.

When trying to battle depression, focus on diet and boost your complex carb intake. Proper production of serotonin, a neurochemical that helps improve mood, requires plenty of complex carbs. You can accomplish this by increasing the amounts of raw vegetables and fresh fruits as well as nuts, whole grains, brown rice and assorted beans.

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. You may want to improve multiple aspects of yourself, but keeping a narrow focus makes it easier to define and achieve your goals. This also helps you maintain this change, as this new habit will be introduced gradually.

Praise others, flatter them, and show your appreciation. Fighting this trend and complimenting others changes your mindset and makes you a kinder person.

TIP! To grow in your own development, you must first acknowledge areas in which you are weak. You need to know that in the grand scheme of things, your problems are very insignificant.

You should seek to eliminate needless stress from your life. Reacting too strongly to negative events will just make you more stressed, which is the last thing you need. Accept that you cannot be perfect at everything and look for alternative ways to achieve your goals if you fail, instead of focusing on your mistakes.

Begin a fund for emergency purposes. It appears as though every time something unexpected happens, we charge more to our credit cards. If you put back just a few dollars every week you will quickly build up an emergency fund. This money can help out in the short and long term because debt continues decreasing.

Are you having a difficult time meeting someone that you want to share your life with? Use the net to jump start your search. Almost half of all couples, about 40%, met their partner online. It is possible that certain someone is looking for you. There are pros and cons with both of them.

TIP! When you are working on your personal development, you should realize you deserve to be the best you can be. You have no one to disappoint but yourself.

Take care of yourself physically to get the most out of your self improvement activities. Achieving your personal development goals is more likely if you keep your energy levels high by getting a sufficient amount of sleep, exercising on a regular basis, and maintaining a nutritious diet. While it may sound simple, this is sometimes one of the most difficult things to do.

If you add up all the information you gathered from the tips in this article, you should now know how to take the first steps in changing yourself for the better. Make sure you are always on the lookout for new information to add to your arsenal of strategies you can use towards personal development

You have to care for yourself before you can start taking care of others. Take time for rest and relaxation, whether your health is good or poor.

Telly Hankton network targeted by sweeping federal probe - Nola.com

? By John Simerman and Brendan McCarthy, Staff writers

A year ago this week, on a windy spit of neutral ground along South Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued a battle cry against a force that prison bars couldn't seem to contain. His target: Telly Terrence Hankton, and anyone who had his back.

Curtis Matthews, the brother of a key witness at Hankton's recent murder trial, was dead, shot down outside the Jazz Daiquiris lounge. The killing had no apparent purpose other than to make a statement: It came just days after a judge handed Hankton a life sentence for pumping 11 bullets into rival Darnell Stewart on nearly the exact same spot in 2008.

Matthews' brother, John, who owned the daiquiri shop and said he saw Hankton bolt from Stewart's killing had himself been shot 17 times at his home in eastern New Orleans several months before the trial. Telly's hot-headed cousin, Thomas "Squirt" Hankton, was later arrested for that shooting, which John Matthews somehow survived.

Those weren't the only times it appeared Hankton had tried to mete out his own brand of justice from behind bars.

At Hankton's first trial, two women allegedly perjured themselves to conjure a false alibi for him. The jury deadlocked, and charges were later lodged against Thomas Hankton and three women.

A few weeks after a jury came back guilty in the second trial, in September 2011, a teal pickup truck rumbled up the steps and smashed through the entrance of the district attorney's office. The widespread suspicion: Team Hankton at work.

By the time Landrieu got in front of the cameras, Hankton's alleged exploits as an Uptown drug mogul, shot-caller and merciless killer with a loyal and lawless posse had reached epic gangland status.

"Behind us is the scene of what I'm sure the Hankton clan thinks is a site of intimidation. If they spray enough bullets and they scare enough people, that the people of New Orleans are gonna walk away. Well, I'm here to tell you that we're not," Landrieu said.

"I'm sending a message loud and clear to Telly Hankton was arrested in Houston a week after Hurricane Katrina on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He pled guilty to a lesser charge, records show Hankton and his family and anyone else associated with this: We're coming to get you."

Within 48 hours, police had planted cruisers outside the homes of Landrieu, Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro, Cannizzaro's prosecutor daughter and others, after threats that a source said were specific enough to warrant concern. The cars would stay there for two weeks.

The bloody twists and turns in the Hankton saga -- with relatives and associates allegedly chipping in -- have only burnished his brutal legend in a city worn raw by murderous street violence.

Soon, that legend -- skeptics call it more of a myth -- is likely to grow.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office is poised, within days or weeks, to unleash a major racketeering indictment against Hankton, at least two cousins, the alleged hit-man accused of killing Curtis Matthews on Hankton's behalf, and several others. The defendants may number a dozen or more.

The indictment is expected to portray a wide-ranging criminal enterprise responsible for numerous murders and brazen shootings across the city, along with armed robberies, drug crimes and possibly the perjury plot, according to sources with knowledge of the probe.

Letten has declined to discuss the case, citing federal rules, and few others are willing to tie their names to it.

But court documents, police reports and a variety of sources, including some people who acknowledged being questioned in recent months by federal agents over potential aspects and targets of the case, indicate that Hankton and Co. are about to get thrown into the federal fire.

The case promises to shed new light on claims that Hankton, 36, sat at the helm of a broad criminal operation, sustained by violence, that stretched from Central City to the farther reaches of Uptown.

"It's going to show the inter-relationships between the violent street crews and drug trade in this city," said a criminal justice source with close knowledge of the federal investigation. "It's going to encompass multiple neighborhoods and a vast, expansive turf."

A shift in Hankton-related cases from Tulane and Broad to federal court downtown has been taking place for months now.

Cannizzaro's office has dropped several pending cases involving Hankton or his alleged associates, turning the files over to federal prosecutors.

Among them, an indictment accusing Hankton and another man, Edward Allen, in the June 20, 2009, killing of Jessie "TuTu" Reed -- while Hankton was free on $1 million bond in Stewart's killing -- is now dead in state court.

Allen went free when the state case was dropped in August. It doesn't appear that the feds plan to include him in the indictment.

Moving to federal court as well is the murder case against Hankton's cousin Andre Hankton, 34. He is accused of ramming a Mustang into Stewart, sending him flying into the air before he landed on the pavement -- where Telly Hankton coolly finished him off under the bright streetlights of South Claiborne.

That case against Andre Hankton recently was dropped last month from state court, with the file turned over to Letten's office. In the meantime, the feds have revived an old stolen gun charge against him.

Stewart was killed by four fatal shots to his cheek, delivered by Hankton in neat succession, prosecutors said at his trial. Hankton, they said, preferred to shoot people in the face.

Federal prosecutors also appear poised to take over the perjury case related to the alibi testimony that Danielle Hampton and Sana Johnson lent Hankton in the first Stewart murder trial, along with the attempted murder allegation against Thomas Hankton in the shooting of John Matthews.

That case has been delayed in state court for months now.

Hampton claimed she'd just met Hankton that morning, then met him for a drink at the W Hotel the night of Stewart's murder. She confessed in a written statement that she'd lied about that.

She said Squirt put her up to the subterfuge.

"I only testified because I felt that if I had not, I would have been a target for not helping Telly," wrote Hampton, who was a manager at the Audubon Zoo at the time.

Ex-bail bondsman Rufus Johnson may also get sucked into the case. Johnson helped Hankton secure his $1 million bond by putting up $220,000 on a property under a business name.

Federal authorities have scrutinized the transaction, a law enforcement source said, and FBI agents have questioned several people about Johnson.

The look at Johnson, a source says, overlaps with a federal grand jury probe into bond practices in Orleans Parish.

Johnson let his bonding license lapse in 1989, applied again in 2003 but failed to complete the paperwork, then tried again this year but was denied because he's a convicted felon, according to the state Department of Insurance.

Josephine Spellman, who had worked for Johnson, was charged last spring with accessory to second-degree murder after she turned in her grandson, who was wanted for a February murder in the River Garden complex.

Spellman said she didn't understand the charge against her, but added that the questioning quickly turned to Johnson and featured a federal agent.

"They asked if I can get some dirt on him," Spellman said. "One was a fed. They wanted me to say something I don't know."

Johnson, who mans a desk at a bond firm across the street from the courthouse at Tulane and Broad, declined to discuss what he knows about the federal probe, saying, "I don't talk about my business."

An Orleans Parish prosecutor said Letten's office still is deciding whether to go federal in yet another case, this one involving attempted murder charges against Telly Hankton and a cousin, former prized LSU football prospect Troy Hankton.

Both are accused of firing away into a car where Stewart, Reed and another man, Karim Peters, sat on April 12, 2007, on Clara Street.

A Cohen High School star, Troy Hankton apparently never played a down at LSU, leaving in 2003 on a medical hardship after his red-shirt freshman year.

Court records show a return home to New Orleans street life. Along with the attempted murder charges from the Clara Street shooting, he's been arrested, but not convicted, for heroin distribution and a pair of weapons counts.

His most recent address in online records is a pink one-story house on Josephine Street in Central City, home to Telly Hankton's mother, Shirley, and also the last known address for Telly Hankton.

State prosecutors have accused Shirley Hankton in court of helping prod the perjury scheme, but she has not been charged.

She declined to talk to The Times-Picayune about her son or the impending federal case. It's unclear whether the feds have an interest in her.

The federal indictment is expected to extend beyond Hankton's immediate orbit.

Near the center of it is Walter Porter, an alleged hit man for Telly Hankton who grew up around Valence Street near Freret.

Even as Landrieu spoke in front of the daiquiri lounge a year ago, police were quietly on the hunt for Porter in the murder of Curtis Matthews, later saying that a witness identified him as the shooter.

Cannizzaro's office dropped Porter's murder charge in May, apparently pending a move to federal court, although he has yet to be charged there.

In the meantime, Porter is being held on federal gun and bank robbery charges. He is accused with an associate, Brian "Beano" Hayes, of sticking up two Capitol One Bank branches in summer 2011, one in Metairie and the other on Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans.

Hayes and seven other men -- but not Porter -- are also accused in state court of possessing stolen property, for allegedly trying to launder red ink-stained cash from one of the bank robberies at machines inside Harrah's casino downtown.

It's unclear whether the feds intend to tie that case in to their racketeering indictment.

Sources said federal agents have tied Porter, conservatively, to a half-dozen murders. It's unclear whether the federal indictment will allege that any were done at Hankton's behest.

One law enforcement source with knowledge of the case said Porter, 36, was known to fire a 9 mm and a .45 caliber handgun at the same time, double-fisted, and that he enjoyed keeping those same weapons to commit other crimes later -- which could help the federal case against him.

Hankton and Porter first hooked up nearly two decades ago while they were both being held at a juvenile detention center in Scotlandville, just north of Baton Rouge, the source said.

"His affinity for his own weapons ended up leading a trail back to him. Porter's pretty well boxed-in," the source said.

"He is the ultimate hired gun. In a sick way. he takes pride in his job. You may not be able to define him as a sociopath, a psychopath or just a natural-born killer. You can't pigeon-hole Porter, but you can know that he is a killer."

Celestine Skia pleaded guilty on Oct. 4 to gun charges, confessing that she made three straw gun purchases for Porter, one of them on the day of Curtis Matthews' shooting. None of those guns, however, has been linked to the murder.

Skia, who faces a sentence of up to 10 years, also has been accused of helping Porter hide out after Matthews' killing.

Porter, Hayes and another man, Gerard Howard, also are caught up in a federal gun and obstruction case, in which they allegedly tried to pin a gun rap on another man, Kernell Evans, from a 2007 traffic stop of Hayes, Howard and Evans near Jackson Avenue and South Claiborne.

Howard, 37, who has a prior manslaughter conviction from 1999, has pleaded guilty in the federal case and is awaiting sentencing.

His attorney, John Garrison Jordan, declined to comment on the case, as did Porter's attorney, J.C. Lawrence.

Porter also is closely connected with recently convicted rapper Christopher "B.G." Dorsey of the famed late-'90s rap super-group Hot Boys, which included Lil Wayne, Juvenile and Turk. Dorsey and Porter grew up together around Valence and Freret.

In jail phone-call transcripts, Porter is heard talking with Dorsey and Jerod "Fetti" Fedison about a failed murder attempt by Dorsey and Porter. Porter suggests to Fedison that he aborted the attempt because Dorsey was too loaded.

A year ago, Fedison was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for obstructing justice. Fedison and Dorsey were in a stolen car during a November 2009 traffic stop where police found three guns.

Prosecutors alleged that Fedison and Dorsey tried to get the third man, Demounde Pollard, to admit they were his guns.

Dorsey, who frequently raps about the shame of "snitching," pleaded guilty to gun possession and obstruction and was sentenced in July to 14 years.

In a video posted online, Dorsey looks into the camera and rants "free my boy Telly... They hatin' on him right now...they got him all over the news...witnesses coming up dead and s--t." Porter, sitting in an SUV in the background, shouts out "Free my dog Telly ...he didn't do it!"

Porter wears glasses and also goes by "Eurkel," an apparent take on the bespectacled "Urkel" character from the old TV sitcom "Family Matters."

In a jail tape recorded four days after Reed's killing in 2009, Fedison is talking on the phone to a girlfriend, Yashica Bickham, claiming Telly Hankton "was trying to pay me $50,000 to kill TuTu."

Fedison said he refused, because "Me and (Reed) share the same baby momma, you heard me? And I need him out there," according to a transcript.

In a later tape, Fedison is heard threatening Bickham, saying he'll "get Eurkel" to kill her, "just like he killed TuTu ...and (Hasan Williams) when I told him do it."

Williams, a.k.a. "Hockie," had identified Telly Hankton as Reed's killer, according to police, then turned up dead on the street two weeks later.

Whether true or not -- Fedison was known to run his mouth -- the jail calls leave little doubt that the Hankton mystique thrives on both sides of prison walls.

Though he gets a shout-out in Porter's video, Telly Hankton's connection to rap circles appears looser. They run through a man -- his murdered cousin, George "Cup" Hankton -- whose killing appears to have sparked the alleged revenge slayings that have landed Hankton behind bars for life.

Cup Hankton was chummy with Cash Money Records co-founder Brian "Baby" Williams and several rappers, according to a police report and other sources, and was a well-known drug trafficker Uptown.

Reverence for Cup Hankton in the neighborhood is documented in a 2-minute YouTube video that crowned him the "King of Holly Grove."

"People just respected him. People lined up to talk to him," one woman says in the video.

Cup Hankton earned his share of enemies, said one man who knew him growing up.

"People wanted Cup dead. He was a hit man who backed off (killing), but still had to pay for those lives," the man said.

Federal officials aren't expected to make any connections to Williams in the indictment.

"Baby (Williams) knew all them guys," said the man who knew the family. "Just because you sell dope and you're a killer, it's not like I'm not going to talk to you."

Skeptics of the developing federal case -- which aims to corral not just Hankton and Porter, but many of their associates -- are quick to note that in New Orleans, a city grounded in family connections and native ties, guilt by association comes cheap.

While Telly Hankton is accused of killing Stewart and Reed out of revenge for Cup Hankton's killing, the bad blood between the two camps clearly preceded Cup's December 2007 murder in Gert Town.

Telly and Troy Hankton's alleged attempt to kill Reed, Stewart and Peters on Clara Street took place eight months earlier.

They weren't always enemies, but a dispute -- likely over drug dealing -- that prompted a string of violence seems to date earlier still.

After Jessie Reed's murder, Hasan Williams told police that Telly Hankton and Cup Hankton, "threatened by street rumors," had fired on Reed with automatic weapons back in 2004, outside a pizza joint in the French Quarter.

"Reed survived the attack and the war started between the two families," a police synopsis of the interview says.

The feud escalated quickly, several sources said, after Cup Hankton's killing, in which Reed and Stewart were both suspected but never charged.

While the killings of Reed and Stewart were chilling for their brazenness, hundreds of pages of police reports and court documents, as well as criminal justice sources, point to a long list of other criminal acts that could fall under the pending indictment.

Ballistics tests, for instance, link dozens of violent crimes and weapons counts.

Among them: One of the guns used to shoot John Matthews also was used to bump off Reed as he sat eating chicken on a porch on June 20, 2009.

Police tie the same gun, a recovered Glock 9mm pistol, to several other shootings in Central City and elsewhere.

For instance: the armed robbery of a pizza delivery woman in the 5500 block of Tchoupitoulas Street in January 2009; the March 2009 killing of 33-year-old Emmanuel Holmes in the 3500 block of Clematis Street in Gentilly; the murder of Christopher Smith, 30, on Helen Drive in Terrytown in November 2010; the June 2010 killing of 28-year-old Kenneth Robertson in the driver's seat of his red Lexus in the 2700 block of Second Street in Central City; a shooting spree along Amelia and Clara streets in June 2007 that left a man with gunshots to his chest, legs, arm and neck; and others.

Just whose hands fired the Glock in several of those cases remains in doubt. Telly Hankton and Edward Allen, the two men who were charged in state court with Reed's killing, both were behind bars during several of those incidents, as were other suspected members of the Hankton clan.

In all, police ballistics tests have identified five guns used in Reed's killing, in which at least two people unloaded a spray of 50 bullets.

Two of those weapons have been tied to the murder two weeks later of Hasan Williams.

By the time Williams was killed, Hankton was back in jail. He is suspected of ordering the hit, but hasn't been charged.

The feds, who started looking into the Hankton clan nearly four years ago, were so concerned about Hankton's influence in the Orleans Parish jail that they asked to have him moved to St. Tammany Parish, to isolate him, Cannizzaro said last year.

The DA intimated that Hankton had been able to order hits from the Orleans jail with help from deputies, though Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman bristled at the suggestion.

From Angola, state corrections officials recently flew Hankton in by helicopter for a court appearance.

Cannizzaro's office has taken on a few of its own racketeering cases under state law, but is glad to let the feds take this one.

"We welcome their involvement. They have prosecutorial tools we don't possess. That is their stock in trade," said Cannizzaro spokesman Christopher Bowman.

He said one of Cannizzaro's "primary goals" when he took office in 2009 was to get Hankton off the streets for life.

"Telly Hankton stood for the worst of the criminal justice system," Bowman said, referring to the suspect bond that set him free after Stewart's killing and his alleged manipulation of the system. "He was symbolic of it."

Hankton was likened by one law enforcement source to Keyser Soze, the mythically ruthless villain from the 1995 film "Usual Suspects." Among the film's cast of hardened criminals, brutal stories about Soze are legion, yet the stories are all different and no one is quite sure whether the tales -- or even Soze -- are real.

While federal authorities recognize that Hankton's reputation is nearly mythic, he's earned it, in their view.

But not everyone agrees. In the old neighborhood, some respect him as a sort of Robin Hood figure, a kind of street-level family scion. In court, during the trials over Stewart's murder, Hankton came across as mild-mannered and polite, even as he stood facing a trembling witness who was testifying about a surveillance video that captured the shooting scene.

The source who knew Telly -- everyone knew Telly, he said -- argued that he is far from the monster or drug kingpin painted by authorities.

He recalls Hankton cheerfully rolling through Central City on a motorcycle. The man mocked the depiction of Hankton as the most dangerous man in New Orleans -- a title first granted by former police Superintendent Warren Riley, then echoed by Landrieu.

"The most dangerous people in the city are young, 15-, 16-year-olds who will blow your brains out over nothing," he said.

"Telly wasn't this guy who goes out killing people. This guy was a good dude. Every dope dealer liked Telly. Darnell (Stewart) was f*ing with Telly. I guess he assumed, 'If I kill Cup, I gotta kill Telly, too,'" he said.

Calling out Hankton's family unfairly cast a harsh light over the entire clan, the man said, noting that the sprawling Hankton family includes a former pro football player, Cortez Hankton, and an NOPD officer.

There are also dozens of Hanktons with criminal records, court records show.

"Telly wasn't the type of dude saying, 'I want to be the biggest dope dealer in the city,'" the man added. "He was a conventional drug dealer. He had little things going. Maybe a little more than others, probably."

Hankton was arrested in Houston a week after Hurricane Katrina on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He pled guilty to a lesser charge, records show.

Until Stewart's murder, he largely steered clear of arrest in New Orleans. He was arrested for possession of a weapon in a bar in 2003 -- a case that went nowhere -- and nothing else in Orleans Parish, court records show.

That is, until Stewart turned up slain on the pavement in front of the daiquiri shop.

The man said he didn't condone the street justice that Hankton allegedly meted out, but still called him "a lovable guy."

His downfall, the man said, was the same thing that lent him respect on the street -- taking matters into his own hands.

"That was his biggest mistake," he said. "He had dudes who would have killed for him."

Despite his defense of Hankton, the man adamantly refused to be identified for this story.

"I could get killed," he said.
