When I heard about Bri's Long Distance Lovin' series, I knew I had to be a part of it.

I think my story is kind of unique because I have lived through both the good and the bad (and the ugly) of long distance relationships (for the sake of repetition, let's call this an LD relationship). I've been through more than one serious LD relationship. (It just kind of happened that way. You can't choose who you fall in love with, right?) My last LD relationship lead to marriage and I could not be happier! :)?

I know every relationship is different, but I can tell you what did and didn't work for me. There are 4 things that I think make or break a LD relationship. I'm a list person, so here we go!

1. Communicate. This is obviously so important in any relationship but especially in a LD one. LD relationships don't have the luxury of being physically there with each other all the time. So tell each other about your day. Tell your partner about that coffee shop down the street that you love and that new girl at the office who is totally driving you crazy. That way when you guys are together, it's more real. You'll walk down the street with him and he will say "Hey, that's that coffee shop you like, right?" and you'll smile because it's like he's been there all along. 2. Trust. Trust and communication. They go hand in hand. In a failed LD relationship that I had, we had little communication. Sure we talked on the phone a lot but he never really mentioned his life. I didn't know about the little things like his favorite thing to eat for breakfast or who was in that group that he went to the movies with. It lead to problems. A lot of them. If that girl wasn't a big deal then why didn't he ever mention her before? Is he seeing her? If I didn't know about her, does she know about me? Yes, I did turn into one of those psycho girlfriends, but I had good reason. He actually was cheating on me. More than once. And in 4 years, I never knew. This is the ugly part that I mentioned earlier. let's not go too much into that though. The point is that I should have known from the beginning that our lack of communication meant that I couldn't trust him. Without trust, there's nothing. 3. Be normal. What I mean by this is just because you are in a LD relationship, doesn't mean you have to miss out on everything that "normal" relationships have. Set up Skype dates. Watch a movie together (just play the movie at the same time). Eat the same dinner. The possibilities are endless! Before Jared and I got married and moved in together, we had date nights via Skype all the time. Sometimes we even played drinking games which always turned out to be pretty hilarious. Get creative!

4. Stay positive. If you don't believe that it will work, then it won't. You have to stay positive for each other. I always had a really hard time with this especially because of my previous relationships. Thank God I was with someone who lifted me up and stayed strong enough for the both of us.

There are obviously a ton of things that factor into making a relationship work, but I really think that these are the basics to make a long distance one work. Russia mogul under pressure wants to sell assets

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian tycoon whose holdings include a leading investigative newspaper critical of the Kremlin said Friday that he wants to sell his Russian assets because of pressure from state security services.

Alexander Lebedev, worth $1.1 billion according to Forbes magazine, said the main KGB successor agency has targeted him with a series of investigations and inspections to push him out of business.

"For the past three years my business has been deliberately and continuously destroyed by Division K of the Federal Security Service's economic security department," Lebedev said on his blog. "Haunting and pressure has targeted not only me and workers of my companies, but my family members as well."

He said the main reason behind the Russian Federal Security Service's pressure on him was corruption investigations by the Novaya Gazeta he has financed, alleging that some of its officers were involved in corruption.

Lebedev and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev own a 49 percent stake in the newspaper, while the remaining shares are controlled by Novaya's staffers. Lebedev also owns two newspapers in Britain, the Independent and the Evening Standard.

The Novaya Gazeta's relentless criticism of the Kremlin and its investigations into official corruption have put many of its journalists under fire. Four of its reporters have been killed since 2000, including Anna Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of the Kremlin and its policies in Chechnya who was gunned down in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building in 2006. Others have been harassed and attacked.

Lebedev said on Ekho Moskvy radio that he may hand over some of his assets to Novaya so that the newspaper may continue operation, because he no longer has no cash to keep funding it.

Lebedev has also supported Alexei Navalny, a charismatic anti-corruption crusader and blogger who was a key driving force against massive protests in the past winter against Vladimir Putin's rule. Earlier this week, Navalny has been charged with theft amid a widening crackdown on dissent that followed Putin's re-election to a third term in March. He may face 10 years in prison if convicted.

Lebedev, a KGB veteran like Putin, has avoided blaming the president for his woes. He said that security officers targeted him because he was the "main sponsor of the opposition," but dismissed that claim as "utter rubbish." He added, however, that he had expected the Kremlin to intervene to stop attacks on him.

Lebedev has made his money in the banking industry and owns the National Reserve Bank. He also has a stake in Russian flag carrier Aeroflot and owns Red Wings airline and other assets.

Lebedev said that it would be hard for him to sell his assets because the security services would discourage any potential buyers. He said he had no intention of leaving Russia, adding that he would try to take a more active role in politics.

Virginia has been a laboratory of democracy since the beginnings of our country, and as we debate the future of health care in our great nation, the Old Dominion should again step forward to lead in the discussion. To do this, Virginia must continue to work toward meaningful health care reform but stand up and object to the significantly flawed national health care mandates that threaten the economic stability of our country.

Three years ago, President Obama told Senate Democrats, ?As we move forward on health reform, it is not sufficient for us to simply add more people to Medicare or Medicaid to increase the rolls, to increase coverage in the absence of cost controls and reform. Another way of putting it is we can?t simply put more people into a broken system that doesn?t work.? Mr. Obama has ignored his own advice, and if implemented as intended, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) will put 16 million to 20 million people into a broken Medicaid system. In Virginia, our Medicaid program already is nearly 20 percent of the commonwealth?s budget, and this number continues to grow. This is without the proposed Medicaid expansion under PPACA. I was elected to be a careful and responsible steward of our limited tax dollars, and it would be irresponsible to infuse billions of tax dollars into a program that we all agree is broken.

The Medicaid expansion, though optional now, is only one of many flawed pieces of PPACA. I strongly support, as do all governors, increasing coverage and access to care. But PPACA aims to achieve that laudable goal in the wrong way: by favoring dependency over personal responsibility. In its current form, the law will destroy the private insurance market while increasing health care costs. America?s economy continues to recover slowly, but it is greatly restricted by skyrocketing deficits and a record national debt. Our national spending is both immoral and unsustainable. PPACA only makes that spending worse. Neither states nor the federal government can afford the Medicaid expansion or the promised federal subsidies needed to make any health benefits exchange functional.

Reform does not happen when it fails to be sustainable or affordable, and PPACA is neither. The United States spends nearly 18 percent of its gross domestic product on a broken health system, while it?s projected that 42.7 million Americans will not have access to health care in 2013. We should not be pushing these uninsured Americans into a crippled paradigm that does nothing to reform the health delivery and payment systems that are the root of the health crisis today. For all these reasons, I continue to call on Congress to repeal PPACA and replace it with meaningful health reforms. We don?t need excessive federal mandates, the creation of bureaucrat-influenced marketplaces, and ill-conceived ideas that are expected to be implemented in unreasonable time frames. We need real market-based health care reforms that will actually make this system work both now and in the years ahead.

Notwithstanding the failed policies within PPACA, an area of significant concern that the spotlight often misses is that our existing health system is currently incapable of handling an increased demand for health care. Why? Because we simply do not have a health workforce large enough to appropriately care for the surge of patients that will flood the system in 2014 if PPACA remains in place. In Virginia, we are taking steps to address this problem by allowing physicians and nurse practitioners to practice in a team-based model of care. Additionally, we are encouraging coordinated care to ensure that people are receiving the right care at the right time and in the right setting.

Bigger government is not the answer to our health care crisis. There has to be an impetus for change, and the change must be an economic driver. In Virginia, employers of all sizes purchase private health coverage for more than 4.3 million employees. Recognizing that an opportunity exists to align economic incentives while promoting quality and value, the newly created Virginia Center for Health Innovation (VCHI) is the central hub for employer engagement in health reforms and innovation. VCHI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan partnership sponsored by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and designed to fast-track the adoption of value-driven models of wellness and health care throughout the commonwealth. This privately led entity is a place where employers, providers and other stakeholders can come together to establish priorities for research, design demonstration projects, and engage employers to leverage their purchasing power to encourage the adoption of proven delivery-system practice and payment reforms. The results of this organization will enable businesses to optimize their health care investments and increase their global competitiveness. Essentially, the private sector is coming together to reform from within.

Reforming in this manner is the key difference between PPACA and our approach in Virginia. The PPACA was drafted without meaningful dialogue with governors and other vested stakeholders. Congress ultimately passed, on a party-line vote, a law that essentially has been impossible to support, much less implement. I continue to call on the president and his administration to provide meaningful guidance about health-benefits exchanges and the Medicaid expansion. I continue to believe in the ability of the private sector to create and impart positive change that will enable more Americans to receive the health insurance coverage they need in a fiscally responsible and affordable way.

Las Vegas Sands target of U.S. money-laundering probe, WSJ says

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Las Vegas Sands Corp, controlled by billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is the target of a federal investigation into possible violations of U.S. money-laundering laws, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

The Los Angeles U.S. attorney's office is looking into the casino company's handling of the receipt of millions of dollars from a Mexican businessman, later indicted in the United States for drug trafficking, and a former California businessman, later convicted of taking illegal kickbacks, the Journal said, citing lawyers and others involved in the matter.

The transactions date from the mid-2000s.

The Journal said there are no indications that actions by Adelson, who is the company's chief executive officer and largest shareholder, are being investigated.

The Los Angeles U.S. attorney could not be reached for comment by Reuters on Saturday. A Sands spokesman was not immediately available to comment to Reuters, but spokesman Ron Reese told the Journal, "The company believes it has acted properly and has not committed any wrongdoing."

Reese said the company was cooperating with federal investigators.

The timing of the investigation could open the Justice Department to criticism that it is politically motivated, the Journal said. Adelson is a major donor to the super PAC supporting presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney against President Barack Obama and plans to spend $100 million on Republican candidates in November's elections.

Adelson, who owns casinos in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore, began this campaign season as a major donor to Newt Gingrich before Gingrich dropped out of the Republican presidential race. He has since switched his support to Romney and last month was in Jerusalem with the candidate when Romney met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who Adelson also strongly supports.

The Journal said the Las Vegas money-laundering investigation focused on two "whales" - as big-money gamblers are known - and whether Sands officials ignored warning signs and did not alert federal authorities about millions of dollars the gamblers had deposited.

The Journal identified one of the "whales" as Zhenli Ye Gon, a Chinese-born Mexican national who was indicted in 2007 in the United States on charges of dealing in materials used to make methamphetamine.

The drug case was dismissed in 2009 but Ye Gon is still in U.S. custody awaiting extradition to Mexico, where authorities want to try him on drug trafficking and money laundering charges, the Journal said, citing court records.

The Journal said Ausaf Umar Siddiqui, a former executive with the Fry's Electronics retail chain, also was under scrutiny. Court filings in another case showed Siddiqui sent more than $100 million to the Sands. Siddiqui was charged with taking kickbacks from Fry's vendors, pleaded guilty and is now in prison.

U.S. authorities also are investigating the Sands to see if there were breaches of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which prohibits bribes to foreign officials by U.S. companies, in its Macau operation.

Schwarzenegger says sports zeal landed him in brig

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.?? Arnold Schwarzenegger was so eager to start his bodybuilding career that he briefly ended up in an Austrian military brig, the actor and former California governor said Friday.

He was 18 and serving a mandated year with the army in his native Austria in the mid-1960s when he snuck out of camp for the Junior Mr. Europe contest in Germany, Schwarzenegger told a meeting of TV critics.

He won the contest but also earned two or three days in the army jail, Schwarzenegger said. But military officials felt "uncomfortable" and he was released, he said.

Schwarzenegger, 65, is the subject of a new ESPN Films documentary, "Arnold?s Blueprint," set to debut Sept. 26 on the ESPN website Grantland.com. It?s one of a series of short documentaries that will be available online.

His army superiors ended up supporting his bodybuilding efforts, he said: They created a makeshift gym for him and helped him get the food he needed to pack on 25 pounds of muscle in a year.

Schwarzenegger, who went on to parlay titles including Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe into a Hollywood career, said his drive to be an athlete helped him during his seven-year tenure as governor that ended in 2011.

When he began pursuing bodybuilding as a youth, he recalled, his parents dismissed his activities as self-indulgent and suspect.

But "I had a very clear vision of where I wanted to go," Schwarzenegger said, including America and movie stardom.

When he encountered resistance to his political goals, he had the ability to ignore cries of "no, no, no, it?s impossible," he said.

"I never saw a ?no? as a ?no.? I always heard ?yes,"? he said, speaking to the Television Critics Association at the final session of the group?s summer meeting.

Schwarzenegger, who has resumed his post-Sacramento acting career, is starring with Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis in the newly released "The Expendables 2."

Fuel-cell powered rickshaw = longer days, less work

Pedal-powered rickshaws of the future may get a boost thanks to hydrogen fuel cell technology under development in Germany.

Called the Hydrogenia, the e-powered pedicab has a 250-watt fuel cell and a hydrogen tank stored under the driver's seat.?

The tank can be refueled in minutes and has a range of about 125 miles, long enough for a full day?s work hauling people and cargo around busy city streets.

Like an electric bike, the rickshaw has pedals but the motor means thighs don't have to do all the work. The fuel cell causes hydrogen to react?with oxygen from the air to generate electricity. Emissions are water vapor.

The technology could be an improvement over current e-powered pedicabs, which have a limited range and long recharge time, according to Lars Rontzsch, the leader of the hydrogen technology group at the Franhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials in Dresden.

Key to?the rickshaw?s success is a hydrogen storage tank based on metal hydride technology, which allows storage in a compact space.

?This is solid-state storage where the hydrogen atoms are incorporated into the lattice structure of a metal alloy, allowing for very dense storage. The tank is filled with pellets made of compressed metal flakes and is not much larger than a six-pack of cans,? FuelCellToday reports.?

Mass production of the technology remains a ways off, the researchers note, but its development is a clear sign that the green technology is becoming positioned to play a role in future transportation systems.
