BRISTOL, Tenn. ? With a two-handed toss of his helmet, Tony Stewart brought back everything that had been missing at Bristol Motor Speedway.

It was the rock 'em, sock 'em style of racing that made the Tennessee bullring the toughest ticket in NASCAR, and fans fill the place for 55 consecutive races hoping to see bumping and banging on the track and the off-track drama it created.

Progressive banking added in 2007 diluted the action, and fans turned their backs on Bristol in droves. Yet another disappointing crowd in March was the final straw for track owner Bruton Smith, who ordered changes to the track surface in the hopes the action would pick up and the fans would return.

He got exactly what he wanted Saturday night, even if his idea didn't go exactly according to plan.

Tempers flared again at Bristol ? the boiling point coming when Stewart heaved his helmet at Matt Kenseth's car after the two wrecked racing for the lead ? and the action on track picked up enough to satisfy most fans.

Five-time Bristol winner Jeff Gordon, who watched some of Bristol's greatest races from the spotter stand before he began his Cup career, thought Saturday night looked a lot like old Bristol.

"Even though it was really tough to pass, it just reminded me of old school Bristol," Gordon said. "I think it was a success and I certainly had a lot of fun. I say they grind the whole place. Sounds awesome. I hope they do that next time."

Believing the progressive banking had created too many lanes for drivers to use, Smith ordered the top groove to be ground down at Bristol. His desired effect was a tighter track that forced drivers to run around the bottom and use their bumpers to move cars out of their way.

They had to use their bumpers, but it was at the top of the track where the action occurred. The new top groove picked up rubber as the race progressed, and the grip in the high line was too attractive for drivers to ignore.

Denny Hamlin, who picked up his first Bristol victory, thought the racing was similar to years past.

"We were all running in a line and just waiting on the next guy to screw up to get around," he said. "That's what you had with the old Bristol. That's how we had to race. I don't think we saw as much side-by-side racing, but you didn't see side-by-side racing with the old Bristol. You just saw a bunch of cars in line waiting on someone to get knocked out of the way or mess up and that's the same thing we had."

With it came the return of a vintage Stewart reaction following his accident with Kenseth.

The three-time series champion had rallied from a lap down to run for the lead with Kenseth, but after the two came close to wrecking for at least an entire lap, they finally collided for reasons neither agreed upon. Stewart showed his displeasure by tossing his helmet at Kenseth's car, and promising a rocky ride the rest of the season.

"I'm going to run over him every chance I've got from now 'til the end of the year, every chance I've got," Stewart said.

That's the kind of responses fans expect at Bristol, where Dale Jarrett in 1993 threw his helmet at Bobby Hillin Jr.'s car. Ward Burton once threw his heel guards at Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson made an obscene gesture, Gordon shoved Kenseth, Kevin Harvick charged after Greg Biffle, and, oh, the late Dale Earnhardt spun Terry Labonte in an effort to "rattle his cage."

On Saturday night, even Danica Patrick got into the action, angrily wagging her finger at Regan Smith after contact from him caused a race-ending wreck after she'd worked her way to 19th.

"We were just racing hard, this is Bristol, this is why people love this track because you see a lot of that, you see tempers flare," Patrick said.

It was the perfect kickoff for the final push to set the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

Hamlin's win was his third of the season, and it created a four-way tie for most wins in the series. Should nothing give over the next two races between Hamlin, Johnson, Stewart and Brad Keselowski, there'd be a logjam for the top seed in the 10-race Chase.

And the race is still on for the final two wild card spots.

A wreck with Juan Pablo Montoya was devastating for Ryan Newman, who slipped out of contention for one of the two wild card berths. Headed into next Sunday's race at Atlanta, Kasey Kahne is still holding steady for one of the spots. Kyle Busch moved into position for the second one, and he leads Gordon by 16 points. Newman fell to fourth in the wild card standings, 19 points behind Busch.

And Carl Edwards, who lost the championship to Stewart last year on a tie-breaker, is still trying to find a way into the Chase.

Hamlin was well aware of the repercussions as he chased down Edwards on the track, using a vintage "slide job" pass of Edwards to take the lead. Then he successfully defended Edwards' attempt to use a crossover to take the lead back, and Hamlin preserved a win that helped him and Busch, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.

Gordon, who finished third, also had an eye on the standings.

"If Carl had won or Kyle had won, it would have gotten us way behind, so we kept ourselves in the battle for it," Gordon said. "We've got two more opportunities and they're good opportunities. I'm a little disappointed myself because I think we had the car and we had the track position and I got loose on new tires on that one run when we really had the guys I felt we had to beat behind us."

Sony getting out of PC optical drive business thanks to 'fierce competition'

It's being reported that Sony is closing Optiarc Inc., its company subsidiary that manufactures optical disc drives for PCs. Officials are quoted as saying that "fierce competition" forced prices down, causing the business to operate at a loss despite controlling roughly 15 percent of the market. Operations will be wound up by March of next year, with around 400 employees being offered early retirement and others being moved to other parts of the business. Don't worry about the future of your Blu-Ray and DVD player just yet though -- the company will continue to manufacture both as part of its Device Solutions Division.

Pumas go west in search of elusive win over Boks

Argentina hope a change of venue will bring a change of fortune when they host South Africa in a Rugby Championship second round match Saturday.

Los Pumas have lost all seven home Tests against the Springboks since they first met 19 years ago, and all were played in the capital Buenos Aires.

But for the first home game in a southern hemisphere championship that includes world champions New Zealand and Australia, Argentina have opted for western city Mendoza at the foothills of the snow-capped Andes mountains range.

The national team have beaten Italy and neighbours Chile at the 45,000-seat multi-sport Estadio Mundialista Malvinas Argentinas in this hub of the biggest Latin American wine-producing region.

But every Argentine player, coach, official and supporter craves a victory over South Africa, the only major rugby nation they have lost every match against. Even the mighty All Blacks were held 21-21 in a 1985 Test.

Including the 27-6 loss in Cape Town last Saturday, the Pumas have suffered 14 consecutive defeats against South Africa with 40-21 the average score when the men in blue and white host the men in green and gold.

"My players are thrilled to be part of the first Rugby Championship match to be played in Argentina. It is a big deal for us," coach and former Pumas flank Santiago Phelan told reporters.

"We are disappointed by the way things went in the first Test, but we did not play that poorly and were competitive. We hung in there, but the team need to play better this weekend.

"There was good quality ball for us from the scrums and lineouts and we tried to play it. Despite conceding three tries, our defensive screen was very good at time."

More than 1,000 spectators attended one Springbok training session this week and 38-year-old Phelan shares the admiration of his countrymen for two-time world champions South Africa.

"The Springboks are powerful, play head-on rugby and aim to impose a physical presence. They are a complete team -- very powerful forwards and very skilful backs," said the coach.

Phelan originally made on change to the team beaten in Cape Town with full-back Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino replaced by Martin Rodriguez, but a training ground injury to fly-half Juan Martin Hernandez lets Nicolas Sanchez in.

The loss of regular casualty Hernandez -- his Test start at Newlands was the first since 2009 -- means both countries will lack a talismanic figure for the showdown at a stadium within the 1,000-acre General San Martin park.

South Africa lost livewire Bismarck du Plessis, widely regarded as the best hooker in the world, early on with a ligaments injury that could sideline him for eight months.

Adriaan Strauss came on and retains his place while a back row reshuffle sees outstanding ball carrier Willem Alberts move from flank to No 8, Jacques Potgieter take his place, and slightly built Keegan Daniel drop to the bench.

"Keegan is a great player, but I am expecting a physical match and thought it would be better to start with Jacques. We need to stop the Pumas' mauls and the change gives us extra weight," explained Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

"If we were playing Australia, Keegan would have started. It was a horses-for-courses decision. When the game opens up during the second half, Keegan will be a better impact player than Jacques.

"We are going to face a passionate Pumas side who have been very difficult to beat at home in recent years. I was not that happy with our performance last weekend and we are in for a massive challenge here."

It will be the first away Test for Meyer, who took charge of the Springboks this year when the contract of Peter de Villiers expired, and follows two wins and a draw against England and a win over Argentina.

Apple triumphs over Samsung in landmark patent case | Firstpost

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) ? Apple Inc (AAPL.O) scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung (005930.KS) on Friday as a U.S. jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.05 billion in damages.

The verdict ? which came after less than three days of jury deliberations ? could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple?s dominance of the exploding mobile computing market.

Apple?s victory is a big blow to Google, whose Android software powers the Samsung products that were found to infringe on Apple patents. Google and its hardware partners, including the company?s own Motorola unit, could now face further legal hurdles in their effort to compete with the Apple juggernaut.

Samsung lawyers were grimfaced in the quiet but crowded San Jose courtroom as the verdict was read, and the company later put out a statement calling the outcome ?a loss for the American consumer.?

The jury deliberated for less than three days before delivering the verdict on seven Apple patent claims and five Samsung patent claims ? suggesting that the nine-person panel had little difficulty in concluding that Samsung had copied the iPhone and the iPad.

Because the panel found ?willful? infringement, Apple could seek triple damages.

Apple upended the mobile phone business when it introduced the iPhone in 2007, and shook the industry again in 2010 when it rolled out the iPad.

It has been able to charge premium prices for the iPhone ? with profit margins of as much as 58 percent per phone ? for a product consumers regarded as a huge advance in design and usability.

The company?s late founder, Steve Jobs, vowed to ?go to thermonuclear war? when Google launched Android, according to his biographer, and the company has filed lawsuits around the world in an effort to block what it considers brazen copying of its inventions.

The legal win on Friday came one year after CEO Tim Cook assumed the helm of the company. Shares in Apple, which just this week became the biggest company by market value in history, climbed almost 2 percent to a record high of $675 in after-hours trade.

Brian Love, a Santa Clara law school professor, described the verdict as a crushing victory for Apple: ?This is the best-case scenario Apple could have hoped for.?

CHALLENGE FOR COMPETITORS

The verdict comes as competition in the mobile device industry intensifies, with Google jumping into hardware for the first time with its Nexus 7 tablet, and Microsoft?s new touchscreen friendly Windows 8 coming in October, led by its ?Surface? tablet.

Apple?s victory could present immediate issues for companies that sell Android-based smartphones and tablets, including Google?s own Motorola subsidiary, which it acquired last year for $12.5 billion, and HTC (2498.TW) of Taiwan.

Amazon (AMZN.O) ? which has made major inroads into the tablet market with its cheaper Kindle Fire ? uses a modified version of Android for its Kindle products but has not yet been subject to legal challenge by Apple.

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said the entire Android universe may now have to consider ?doing something different.?

?It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to look at it and figure it out,? he said. ?Prior to the iPhone, none of the phones were like that. Android, if you look at it, is very similar.?

Some in the industry say Apple?s legal offensive is bad for consumers.

?Thx Apple it?s now mandatory for tech companies to sue each other. Prices go up, competition & innovation suffer,? Mark Cuban, an Internet entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, said in a Twitter message.

But the legal battles are far from over. In a separate but related case, Apple has won a pre-trial injunction against the Google Nexus tablet. Another lawsuit, against Motorola, was thrown out recently by a federal judge in Chicago, but litigation between the two at the International Trade Commission continues.

Earlier on Friday, a South Korean court found that both companies shared blame for patent infringement, ordering Samsung to stop selling 10 products including its Galaxy S II phone and banning Apple from selling four different products, including its iPhone 4.

Still, the trial on Apple?s home turf ? the world?s largest and most influential technology market ? was considered the most important test of whether Apple would be able to gain substantial patent protection for the iPhone and the iPad.

FAST-PACED, HIGH-STRESS TRIAL

The legal fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in multiple countries, and Samsung countersued. The U.S. jury spent most of August in a packed federal courtroom in San Jose ? just miles from Apple?s headquarters in Cupertino ? listening to testimony, examining evidence and watching lawyers from both sides joust about patents and damage claims.

Jurors received over 100 pages of legal instructions from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on August 21, prior to hearing the closing arguments from attorneys.

Lawyers from both tech giants used their 25 hours each of trial time to present internal emails, draw testimony from designers and experts, and put on product demonstrations and mockups to convince the jury.

At times, their questions drew testimony that offered glimpses behind the corporate facade, such as the margins on the iPhone and Samsung?s sales figures in the United States.

From the beginning, Apple?s tactic was to present what it thought was chronological evidence of Samsung copying its phone.

Juxtaposing pictures of phones from both companies and internal Samsung emails that specifically analyzed the features of the iPhone, Apple?s attorneys accused Samsung of taking shortcuts after realizing it could not keep up.

Samsung?s attorneys, on the other hand, maintained Apple had no sole right to geometric designs such as rectangles with rounded corners. They called Apple?s damage claim ?ridiculous? and urged the jury to consider that a verdict in favor of Apple could stifle competition and reduce choices for consumers.

Samsung?s trial team appeared to suffer from strategic difficulties throughout the case. Judge Koh gave each side 25 hours to present evidence, but Samsung had used more time than Apple before Samsung even began calling its own witnesses.

By the end of the trial, Samsung attorneys had to forgo cross-examination of some Apple witnesses due to time constraints. During closing arguments, Samsung lead attorney Charles Verhoeven played mostly defense, spending relatively little time discussing Samsung?s patent claims against Apple.

The jury had not been expected to return a decision so rapidly. Even on Friday, Samsung?s lead lawyer was spotted casually clad in a polo T-shirt and jeans.

But late Friday afternoon, a court officer announced a verdict had been reached. After the verdict was read, Koh found some inconsistencies in the complex jury form and asked the jury to revisit it, ultimately resulting in a reduction of about $2 million in the damages award.

The jury decided Samsung infringed six out of seven Apple patents in the case, and that Apple had not infringed any of Samsung?s patents. Apple?s protected technology includes the ability for a mobile device to distinguish one finger on the screen or two, the design of screen icons, and the front surface of the phone.

The jury also upheld the validity of Apple?s patents, and said Samsung acted willfully when it violated several of Apple?s patents. That could form a basis for Koh to triple the damages tab owed by Samsung.

?This is a vindication of Apple?s effort to create significant airspace around their design, and that?s relevant not just for Samsung, but for firms coming over the horizon,? said Nick Rodelli, a lawyer and adviser to institutional investors for CFRA Research in Maryland.

Apple?s lawyers said they planned to file for an injunction against Samsung products within seven days. Koh set a hearing for September 20.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.
