Industrial Contractor

Jobsite Generators ? Contractors, builders, electricians, roofers, painters, carpenters and other types of construction workers need portable power at the jobsite for tools, equipment and lights. If that?s what you need a portable generator for, don?t waste your time with cheap generators. When you?re on a jobsite, the last thing you need is a generator that produces erratic power, is hard to start or that burns more fuel than an eight cylinder gas guzzler. Remember; time is money and the more time you spend restarting and refueling your generator, the less money you make. For jobsites, we only recommend industrial/contractor grade generators.

Abrasive preparation is also used by industrial painting contractors. This can be dry, wet, or a combination of wet and dry. In this way rust, grit, dust and chemicals can easily be removed to leave a virgin surface ready for the paint application. When sufficient care and attention is taken over the preparation process, the painting process is made easier with a greater likelihood of a successful outcome.

The invention of cranes has changed the way the construction industry works completely. Before cranes were introduced, simply hundreds of men would have to work together to lift heavy objects and construct buildings. However, with the use of cranes we have created something extraordinary in the world enabling mankind to build much bigger and better things. Construction companies nowadays are often put off by the prices of new cranes, but have they thought about used cranes that are available? Please continue reading in order to discover why used cranes are just as efficient at carrying out their job as new ones are.

Occasionally, in India the construction industry will have to deal with a construction manager at-risk project, which declines in between the two. The architect is hired individually from the general contractor, but the contractor is engaged in the task from the pre-construction method all the way through completion. The estimate comes in the pattern of an assured greatest cost, covering all services rendered from pre-construction through the construction process.

If you are in need of a Commercial Industrial Contractor Portland company, you should first consider your options. There are multiple businesses out there vying for your work, so why not be selective and get a good contractor to help you with your commercial needs? Here are a few ways to not only find a good quality contractor, but also how to know if they?ll do a good job.

Any general contractor Denver may opt to make an unique mixture containing, bitumen, asphalt, and organic adhesive and glass fibers. This mixture of adhesive is very useful to form a strong adhesive bond between flat roof and upper walls of the home. Flat roof is a good choice for summer. It avoids hot air breezes from entering the home through its flat sheets. The flat sheets do not allow entry of heat in the home.

All participants in the construction business such as construction developers, architects, engineers, investors and general contractors need professional and accurate translation services.

Setting up in industrial asphalt paving is most certainly not a do-it-yourself job. You need to find an asphalt paving contractor, and this may be tougher said than done.

Industrial painting contractors may also use abrasive surface preparation to clean the surface.

The Note's Must-Reads for Monday, July 30, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Jayce Henderson, Amanda VanAllen, and Carrie Halperin

MITT ROMNEY: ABC News' Holly Bailey: " Romney: 'No option should be excluded' in stopping a nuclear Iran" Speaking against the backdrop of the historic Old City, Mitt Romney signaled he supports Israel's right to "defend itself" against its enemies and said "any and all measures" should be considered in the world's efforts to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The Republican candidate said preventing a nuclear Iran should be America's "highest national security priority." LINK

USA Today's Meredith Mandell and Jackie Kucinich: " Romney takes aim at Iran during trip to Israel" Preventing a nuclear Iran is the "highest national security priority" for the U.S., Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Sunday, and "no option should be excluded" in that pursuit. With the backdrop of Jerusalem's Old City behind him, Romney sought to strike an aggressive tone and vowed to "stay together and stand together" with Israel as it faces threats from neighboring countries. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Sara Murray: " Romney Talks Tough" Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney signaled a tougher approach to Iran's nuclear ambitions, telling Israelis on Sunday that "no option should be excluded," including the use of military force. Keeping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons should be America's "highest national security priority," Mr. Romney said in a speech set against the backdrop of Jerusalem's Old City. LINK

The Boston Globe's Callum Borchers: " Mitt Romney says he is 'clear in the purpose that America represents'" Mitt Romney said Sunday that his conviction and problem-solving skills would make him a successful foreign policy president in the mold of Ronald Reagan, who like Romney lacked experience in international diplomacy. "I would say that foreign policy is a place where intelligence, resolve, clarity and confidence in cause is of extraordinary importance," Romney said in an interview with CBS News before delivering a foreign policy address in Jerusalem. LINK

The Washington Times' Abraham Rabinovich and Seth McLaughlin: " Romney in favor of 'any measures' against Iran" In a 6,000-mile reach for evangelical and Jewish voters in the presidential election, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney said Sunday that the U.S. should "employ any and all measures" to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, arguing that it is the nation's most pressing national security issue. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Maeve Reston: " Romney takes hard line on Iran in Israel speech" On a day that mixed religious symbolism, courtship of financial donors and tough rhetoric, Mitt Romney on Sunday declared in his most aggressive tones to date that the U.S. should stand firmly behind Israel if it chooses military action to thwart Iran's progression toward a nuclear weapon. LINK

The Hill's Meghashyam Mali: " Romney laughs off Newsweek magazine's 'wimp' cover story" GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney brushed off a Newsweek cover labeling him a "wimp," saying that the media tried the same tactic to discredit former President George H. W. Bush. "They tried that in George Herbert Walker Bush. He was a pretty great President and anything but," said Romney in an interview on CBS's Face the Nation. LINK

New York Daily News' Thomas Defrank: " After a blunder-filled stay in London, Mitt Romney ventured to Israel, but President Obama's camp was more than happy Sunday to talk about the Republican's U.K. missteps" As Mitt Romney tried to change a sore subject in Israel on Sunday, President Obama's gleeful surrogates kept hammering the GOP nominee over his comments in London that so incensed British politicians and the press. Predictably, Team Obama took to the Sunday political talk show circuit and pounced on Romney's remarks as an opening to question whether he has foreign policy smarts let alone experience. LINK

Bloomberg's Nicole Gaoutte: " Romney's Russia Rhetoric May Backfire In Visit To Poland" Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrives in Poland today seeking to burnish his foreign policy standing and score points against President Barack Obama for his "abandonment" of the eastern Europe. While Polish relations with Obama have been bumpy, Romney's attempts to play off Cold War fears in a former Soviet satellite and to connect with Americans of eastern European descent may not resonate in today's Poland, analysts and scholars said. LINK

OTHER / VOTING RIGHTS: The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny: " Bill Clinton to Have Leading Role at Party's Convention" Former President Bill Clinton is set to play a central part in the Democratic convention, aides said, and will formally place President Obama's name into nomination by delivering a prime-time speech designed to present a forceful economic argument for why Mr. Obama deserves to win a second term. LINK

The Washington Post's Matt Zapotosky, Emma Brown, Laura Vozzella, Joshua Hicks and David A. Fahrenthold: " As presidential campaign heads into final 100 days, undecided voters still struggle" There are 100 days left in what, at times, has seemed like an endless presidential election. And these are the bewildered sounds of the Undecided American, trying to decide. "I know Obama says he has put people back to work, and I don't dispute that," Pam Nickel said at an outdoor shopping mall in Perrysburg, Ohio, on Tuesday. Underemployment is a big issue for her, though. "I don't know that the last four years will sway me as much as what happens in the next few months," she said. LINK

Politico's Jim Sensenbrenner: " Politicizing Voting Rights Act dims luster" The fundamental goals and bipartisan legacy of the Voting Rights Act are imperiled by Attorney General Eric Holder's Justice Department and the administration he serves. The beleaguered attorney general recently asserted that common-sense efforts to ensure the identity and citizenship of voters represent a modern "poll tax" - inconsistent with the Voting Rights Act. Mysterious nodding disease afflicts young Ugandans

KITGUM, Uganda (AP) ? Augustine Languna's eyes welled up and then his voice failed as he recalled the drowning death of his 16-year-old daughter. The women near him looked away, respectfully avoiding the kind of raw emotion that the head of the family rarely displayed.

"What is traumatizing us," he said after regaining his composure, "is that the well where she died is where we still go for drinking water."

Joyce Labol was found dead about three years ago. As she bent low to fetch water from a pond a half mile from Languna's compound of thatched huts, an uncontrollable spasm overcame her. The teen was one of more than 300 young Ugandans who have died as a result of the mysterious illness that is afflicting more and more children across northern Uganda and in pockets of South Sudan.

The disease is called nodding syndrome, or nodding head disease, because those who have it nod their heads and sometimes go into epileptic-like fits. The disease stunts children's growth and destroys their cognition, rendering them unable to perform small tasks. Some victims don't recognize their own parents.

Ugandan officials say some 3,000 children in the East African country suffer from the affliction. Some caregivers even tie nodding syndrome children up to trees so that they don't have to monitor them every minute of the day.

Beginning Monday, Uganda hosts a four-day international conference on nodding syndrome that health officials believe will lead to a clearer understanding of the mysterious disease.

World Health Organization officials in Uganda said the conference will be attended by about 120 scientists from all over the world. Anthony Mbonye, of Uganda's Ministry of Health, said the conference will allow scientists to share knowledge about the disease.

Scientists are working to find the cause of the disease, which is stretching health care capacities here and testing the patience of a community looking for answers as to why it attacks mostly children between the ages of 5 and 15, why it's concentrated in certain communities, and whether it is contagious.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has been investigating nodding syndrome at the request of the Ugandan government, has ruled out 36 possible causes since 2009 and is carrying out a clinical trial for potential treatments. In mid-February the lead investigator said on a visit to Uganda that there is now "clear evidence that this is an epidemic" about which very little is known.

"We did repeated exams on several of these children and found that some of the children had stayed the same, some of the children had gotten worse, none of the children had improved," said Scott Dowell, director of CDC's Division of Global Disease Detection and Emergency Response.

Researchers are focusing on the connection between nodding syndrome and the parasite that causes river blindness, Dowell said, though it is not yet clear there are any links. Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, has been around for a long time, but nodding syndrome is somewhat new, he said. "And we also know that there are many parts of the world that have onchocerciasis but have no evidence of nodding syndrome."

Many residents here in the northernmost reaches of Uganda, nearly 300 miles from Kampala, say they think the disease is rooted in violence. Locals have said it's the only explanation for the disease's prevalence in places most affected by the legacy of a brutal war carried out by Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group. Kony and the group have waged a campaign of murder, rape, and the abduction of boys and girls who go on to become killing machines or sex slaves.

"We the Acholi have suffered a lot, and I am asking why," said Benjamin Ojwang, an Anglican bishop in the area. "In the absence of Kony, we were beginning to find relative peace. When are our people going to rest?"

A disease as strange as nodding head gives people a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, said N.K. Okun-Okaka, a retired veterinarian who has the status of a village elder.

"They can only do something about it if they know the cause, how it is spread. My heart goes out to these children. We feel very sorry and we feel like we do not live in the modern world," he said.

Ugandan health officials have known about the disease for nearly 10 years. By 2006, after Kony was repulsed from Ugandan territory, health care providers had diagnosed several cases of epilepsy without stopping to ask why.

"This thing is old," said Emmanuel Tenywa, a World Health Organization official in northern Uganda. "After the war there were so many cases of epilepsy. That's how this thing started."

Yet serious steps to manage the disease were taken only in the last year after a group of parliamentarians accused the authorities of criminal negligence. The government then announced a $2.2 million plan. But the cash has been slow to reach treatment centers.

Sick children have remained stuck in villages where biting poverty sometimes combines with the inattention of caregivers. Children have been badly burned after falling in fires. Others have died falling into water, like Languna's 16-year-old girl. And it is common to see children tethered to trees by caregivers too busy to look after them.

In Languna's household alone, eight children suffer from the disease, including a 12-year-old boy whose growth is so stunted he looks half his age. Languna has given up on all of them.

"We lost a child who was so promising," he said. "But what pains us more is that these ones you see are destined to (die)."

Investigators said they are not certain the disease is non-communicable, but they advise against alarm.

In the absence of definitive answers, some here have been taking matters in their own hands by isolating the sick. At the Okidi primary school, which Labol attended before she drowned, teachers once attempted to segregate the children and then dropped the idea after being criticized. Since 2007 there have been 141 cases of nodding disease at the school, with seven ending in death.

Now sick children rarely come to school, science teacher Paska Atto said.

Luke Nyeko, the Kitgum chairman, is frequently stopped by parents demanding to know what exactly their children are suffering from or why they cannot be cured.

"I feel very bad, very bad," he said of encounters with distressed parents. "It's a bit tricky because you can't go and lie to them. We just tell them that we don't know the condition."

Economy and Society ? Blog Archive ? The Demise of Union Power ...

(Paranoia & Fantasy on the Right) ? Published on ZNet, by Anthony Dimaggio and Paul Street, July 28, 2012.

The election season is upon us and along with it comes the standard Republican claims to be up against a powerful Democratic Party machine backed by the awesome clout of the ?union bosses? of American labor. We have been told this endlessly by pundits on the reactionary right such as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck ? those happy to misrepresent and distort the long decline and near-extinction of the American labor movement ? //

? Independent of such secret business expenditures, however, one can at least measure how much labor and business interests have spent as related to on the books campaign contributions and spending that benefit political candidates and parties. This data, available from the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP), shows just how silly and propagandistic the focus on labor power is. In 2008, for example, the CRP estimates that 71.8 percent of all campaign contributions came from traditional political action committees (PACs) and individuals that represented business interests, compared to a miniscule 2.7 percent of all contributions that originated from labor unions and individuals representing labor organizations. The numbers were similar for 2010, as business interests provided 72.5 percent of all contributions, while labor interests gave just 5.1 percent.

Beyond unions? inability to compete with corporations and wealthy donors when it comes to funding candidates and lobbying office-holders, another thing the Journal doesn?t tell its readers about is organized labor?s minor impact on the political consciousness of its own dues-paying members. Forget for a moment that the U.S. union density rate (the percentage of workers enrolled in unions) has fallen from 26.7 percent in 1973 to 13.6 percent in 2009, and to approximately 11.8 percent by 2011. Also forget that just 6.9 percent of U.S. private sector workers are covered by union contracts as of 2011. How does the shrunken American labor ?movement? perform when it comes to influencing the political attitudes of those who are members? ? //

? (chart: Effects of Tea Party Affiliation and Union Membership on Political Attitudes ? July 2011, Pew Research Center)

Tea Party membership is an effective predictor of conservative-reactionary attitudes for an astounding 90 percent of all questions, whereas labor membership predicts liberal attitudes for just 20 percent of questions asked. In other words, there is little evidence of the power of labor unions to foster any sort of critical ?labor consciousness? among their members today, largely due to the beleaguered state of unions, and as seen in their unsuccessful efforts to influence their members? attitudes and ideology.

The deadly consequences of this absent labor consciousness were evident when Wisconsin?s hard right Tea Party Republican Governor Scott Walker prevailed over the union-led effort to recall him in the wake of his assault on public workers? collective bargaining rights. The remarkable amount of right-wing business money that Walker raised across the nation was an obvious factor behind his victory in the recall election last month. Still, we cannot join the Nation?s Wisconsin-based liberal commentator John Nichols in dismissing Walker?s victory as a triumph of out-of-state money over a comparative cash-poor ?people?s power? campaign in Wisconsin. As the astute left commentator Lance Selfa notes:

?This ignores the fact that Walker?and more broadly, conservative politics?has a base in the state?.Huge turnouts in the largely white and affluent suburbs that ring Milwaukee provided the bedrock of support for Walker. But Walker also won thousands of downscale rural voters, as well as an astounding 38 percent of union household voters. How could this be? Leaving aside the fact that conservatives make up a solid minority of union households, it?s also true that labor leaders and the Democrats didn?t change the political dynamics in the state.? (Socialist Worker, July 2012, p.14).

Yes, more than a third of voters from union households supported arch-reactionary policymakers who explicitly target union power for defeat and rollback. That?s a pretty blatant indication of ?big labor?s? abject failure to build any kind of meaningful movement culture of popular, working class solidarity and action to improve and protect the living standards of ordinary people. We blame that failure on the narrow vision and bureaucratic timidity and selfishness of union ?leaders? and the broader and deeper limits of U.S.-style ?business unionism? (which has long rejected the tactics and politics of class-wide workers? solidarity), NOT the supposedly selfish and right wing nature and views of everyday working people. This is not meant to demonize individual unionists, but merely to point out (as we?ve learned in our own interactions with many labor leaders) that unions today are largely apolitical in terms of their failure to build much of a labor consciousness for their members. In short, they are responsible for little more than securing collective bargaining benefits.
The limits of today?s unions aside, the opinion, campaign finance, and union membership data cited in this essay ought to render laughable the Wall Street Journal and Fox News? paranoid fantasies about the breathtaking political clout of ?Big Labor? and ?union bosses? in the U.S. The U.S. labor union is a shell of what it once was in terms of membership and political influence. And although we lack comparable public opinion data from earlier years, it seems reasonable to suspect that labor unions were more powerful in previous decades (dating back to the immediate post World War II era and earlier too), when union members accounted for a far larger share of American workers.

None of this data is meant to suggest that the Tea Party is a juggernaut of political discipline and activism that should be emulated by those on the left. As we?ve painstakingly documented elsewhere, most of the Tea Party?s power and influence stems from the top down. The group receives Astroturf corporate financing from billionaire reactionaries of the Koch brother variety, and it benefits from the megaphone of Fox News and other right wing media, rather than spreading its messaged in a decentralized way from the bottom up. The group is far from a ?grassroots rebellion? ? as we found in our recent examination of local Tea Party chapters and their weak-to-non-existent political organizing. In reality, the Tea Party?s power stems from the false consciousness that is produced by the consistent organizing and deep pockets on Wall Street and in corporate America more generally. Business organizers have succeeded in perverting not only U.S. elections, but also the American mind via the Tea Party phenomenon. It is this perversion that we will have to defeat if there is to be any hope for achieving a real labor (or leftist vision more generally) in America?s near future. (full text).

GOLF - Scott Piercy takes out Canadian Open

July 29 | Mon Jul 30, 2012 4:50am IST

July 29 (Reuters) - American Scott Piercy has won the Canadian Open by one shot at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ontario on Sunday after countrymen William McGirt and Robert Garrigus missed chances on the final hole to force a playoff.

Piercy won his second PGA Tour title after firing a three-under par 67 in the penultimate group to post 17-under 263, but had to nervously watch as McGirt (69) bogeyed out of a share of the lead and Garrigus (70) left a 14-foot birdie effort short on the 72nd hole to finish at 264.

Josh Teater (66), Bud Cauley (66) and Chris Kirk (68) shared fourth, three off the pace at 266.

Former champion and world number one Vijay Singh joined two others in a tie for seventh at 268.

Piercy started two behind 54-hole leader Garrigus but flew out of the blocks with four consecutive birdies between the second and fifth holes.

But bogeys on the eighth and 14th holes gave McGirt the edge until Piercy made a short chip-in birdie on the 15th and McGirt three-putted the same green to tie things up at the top.

McGirt then pushed his approach on the last into a greenside bunker and couldn't get up and down, while Garrigus, needing birdie, managed a close approach, but left the 14-foot putt inches short.

Piercy now qualifies for the lucrative World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, next week forcing him to miss out on defending his Reno-Tahoe Open title from 2011.

"?I am so excited. Reno last year was definitely a platform for me to showcase how good I could really be and if that's any sign to how this year has been I've got some big things coming up," the 33-year-old Piercy said.

?"You just have to believe in yourself. Half the battle is being confident in yourself. Just knowing you can get there. If you keep working hard, good things will come."

McGirt was left to rue letting a maiden title slip but still secured enough points to qualify for the upcoming playoff series and also his PGA Tour card for 2013.

?"It was a struggle to get the butterflies to fly in formation, let's put it that way," he said.

?"I have never been in this situation before. But to have the chance to win a golf tournament, to have the chance to get in a playoff, it was something new to me but it was an absolute blast. I just kind of hit the worst putt of the week on the last hole."

Graham DeLaet secured low Canadian honors at 278, 15 shots off the pace.

B.J. Penn, Invicta FC and Rousimar Palhares: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.28.12

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garnering all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6!? Wahoo!).? But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs,?and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it?in one place for you to read.? You're welcome.

  • B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald have signed up for the more stringent Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing ahead of their UFC 152 meeting.? Remember: athletic commissions already screen fighters for banned substances, so what Penn and MacDonald?are doing goes above and beyond what's required.? Bravo, guys.

Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural.? On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.

?

  • The Invicta Fighting Championships weigh-ins were last night, and?everything is?a?"go" for the all-female MMA card tonight?(broadcast for free on their site).? If you tune in, keep an eye on the main event, which features veteran submission specialist Shayna Baszler (who trains under Josh Barnett and once won a bout with a Twister, which is cool beans) taking on undefeated rising star Sara McMann (who won the Silver Medal in Freestyle wrestling in the 2004 Summer Olympics).? Because of her credentials, comparisons have been made between McMann and Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey - who took the Bronze Medal in judo in the 2008 Summer Olympics - but I say McMann needs a bit more seasoning.? Watch and judge for yourself, though.? I mean, who the heck am I?

?

  • Rousimar Palhares, a.k.a. "Toquinho", a.k.a. "that crazy guy who tears off legs and?will someday go?bonkers in the Octagon and have a psychotic break", won't require surgery for that knee injury that forced him out of his UFC 150 bout against Yushin Okami.? Tatame was kind enough to write something in English about it, so props to them.?

?

That's it for now.? If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see.? Follow or don't.? It doesn't matter to me.? I'm used to talking to myself.

Promotional Rugby Ball - What to consider when choosing a ball for ...

Promotional balls When the administration of a team considers purchasing equipment for the players, quality is always first on their mind. A good ball for example must be well sown and made from the best type of leather. The dimensions should be perfect and the size and weight should meet the requirements set by various sports governing bodies. The shape should also be considered since different types of balls have different types of shapes. A mini rugby ball for example is oval shaped and is made from rubber.

However, apart from these requirements, a ball could also have an attractive look and feel to it. This helps to make the ball more dynamic and appealing as well as more vibrant as it is thrown from one end of the field to another. For this, a rugby team, for example, could choose to purchase a promotional rugby ball. These balls usually feature various graphics and color finishes as well as different types of paint and pictures. All these are aimed at ensuring that the ball is appealing to the eye of the beholder.

There are various designs that are used and the administration of the team could choose the one that they fancy most. However, the administration could also choose to customize the design to meet their promotional needs. The ball could include a logo from a well known organization in the colors and designs of the organization. Such a ball will meet all the requirements of a regular ball in terms of weight and size, but the color and graphics on it will be different.

The type of sport When purchasing a ball, it is important to consider the type of sport that the ball will be used in. This is because balls that are used in the game of football are very different from balls that are used in the game of basketball. This is because a basketball is handled by hand and therefore it should have more grips, than a soccer ball which is played using the foot. Other types of sports require balls that differ in terms of weight, shape, size and even material. It is therefore important for the administration of sports clubs to be familiar with this before they purchase a ball.

Ball manufacturers Furthermore, it is important to have information on the different ball manufacturers on your fingertips. This is because reputation is also important when choosing where to buy a sports ball from. For example, some netball manufacturers are known for making high quality balls that are durable and easy to play with. However, others do not have the same reputation as they may have made less appealing balls in the past. The administration should therefore do their homework and determine which manufacturers are the best when it comes to making the types of balls that they want.

10 Tips for a Greener Lifestyle | Go Green Living Tips

Green seems the way to go these days and green living can be accomplished by making simple changes at home and in your lifestyle. We hear all the time about recycling and reusing, yet sometimes it is difficult trying to decide where to start on the mass undertaking. There are simple and easy changes that can be made for a greener lifestyle and a great start is by following the 10 tips.

Use the Public Library-The public library is free to use and not only are there typically thousands of books to choose from but many of the public libraries also let patrons check out CDs, DVDs, board games, video games and much more. The public library is an excellent way to reuse items and it is a very easy step to green living.

Insulate Water Tank-The water tank in the home is a source of tremendous heat loss. Home improvement stores sell water tank insulators which are a great investment as they can save in the long run on heating costs. I chose not to purchase a store bought insulator but instead just wrapped my water tank with insulation sheets and then wrapped a few lengths of electrical tape around the insulation so it was snug again the water heater. It has been on for a few years and it has worked great so far!

Walk or Bike-I know this may not always be an option especially if you live in area that is seasonably cold but there are probably times when the weather is nice that you could bike or walk to your destination. I am guilty of driving too often when I could take a bike but I just do not feel like riding, this is something that I need to change in my life. The amount of fuel that is used and the carbon gas given off in those short trips around town can be the most wasteful. An excellent route to green living is by using the car less plus walking and biking is great exercise.

Refill or recycle empty printer ink cartridges-Refilling an ink cartridge is little more work but what a great way to reuse an item. If refilling an ink cartridge is not for you then recycle the cartridge, many schools and public facilities collect ink cartridges as a fundraiser method. It is a small but great way to give back to the community plus you are helping out the environment.

Use a Digital Camera-A digital camera as compared to the camera with film is much more efficient as there is less processing and less waste.

Lower the thermostat-Just by lowering the thermostat by 1 degree in your home will save on costs and energy. Lowering the temperature by 1 degree will probably not be noticed by the family, it is a very simple way to green living and it will save you some money too.

Fill the Washing Machine and Dishwasher-Try running the washing machine and dishwasher only at the full loads, this will help with energy costs and also to use less water.

Buy Online-Make purchases online and this will help save on automobile wear and tear, less gas is used and it better for the environment with less cars on the road.

Purchase second hand items-Such places as Goodwill are great places to shop, it is an excellent method to reuse items plus it is a way to help less fortunate individuals with employment opportunities. We have a Goodwill near our home and I really enjoy going to the store and finding unusual and very reasonably priced items.

Use Low-Energy light bulbs-Switching light bulbs to low-energy bulbs is a very easy way to save energy and money. Light bulbs are one of the best ways to green living in your home.

Try to make green living a fun project, looking for small and easy ways to recycle, reuse and save energy can be accomplished by making simple changes or taking small steps in your home or lifestyle.

Weaker demand pressures Dow Chemical 2Q

Dow Chemical CEO Andrew N. Liveris has a pretty bleak assessment of the world's economy, predicting that it could take until 2014 for growth to return to a normal pace.

Liveris said Thursday that deteriorating global business conditions caused a 34 percent drop in Dow Chemical's second-quarter net income. And he doesn't expect to see much improvement for the rest of this year.

"The new reality is that this world is not in a normal growth mode," he told analysts on a conference call. "And it does not appear that we will see this for at least 12 to 24 months."

A quarterly profit of 55 cents per share missed estimates and shares in the nation's largest chemicals maker fell 3.7 percent in afternoon trading. Liveris said volumes fell in most categories as demand dropped because of a "synchronized global economic slowdown." Customers were cautious about purchases because of uncertainty about where global growth is headed.

The Midland, Mich., manufacturer has a broad reach across industries and geographic regions, selling materials used in everything from televisions and paint to construction and agricultural products.

Since the end of the first quarter, economies have slowed in the U.S. and China. Some European countries have fallen into recession as the massive debt crisis there drags on. Manufacturing has declined in all three regions.

For the April-through-June quarter, Dow Chemical's earnings fell to $649 million. A year earlier, Dow earned $982 million, or 84 cents per share. Revenue dropped 10 percent to $14.51 billion. That's the company's first decline in revenue since the third quarter of 2009.

Analysts polled by FactSet forecast earnings of 64 cents per share and revenue of $15.69 billion.

Sales fell for materials used in electronics, energy, coatings and infrastructure. Sales also fell for performance materials, like polyurethane and epoxy. Performance plastic volumes rose but sales dropped because of a 9 percent decrease in prices.

One bright spot was agricultural products where sales rose 12 percent to a second-quarter record of $1.7 billion.

Overall, prices fell 5 percent, declining in all geographic regions. The biggest drop ? 8 percent ? was in Europe.

To contend with these conditions, Dow Chemical will ramp up its efforts to cut costs and reduce capital expenditures. Liveris said that the company will extend the time expected for it to reach near-term earnings targets but still expects to hit those targets.

Shares of Dow Chemical fell $1.12, or 3.7 percent, to $29.15 in afternoon trading. Its shares have risen 41 percent since hitting a 52-week low of $20.61 in October but are still short of their high of $36.32 late last July.

Satechi 3.0 4-Port USB Hub

More is better, at least when it comes to USB 3.0 ports. This rings especially true in the era of ultrabooks, which tend to be rather skimpy on port selection. And it's safe to say that fewer things disrupt workflow or unnecessarily irritate more than being forced to switch between peripheral devices because of limited port real estate. Enter the Satechi 3.0 4-Port USB Hub ($39.99 direct), which lets you quadruple your system's USB 3.0 connectivity. Naturally it's backward-compatible with USB 2.0 devices as well, but its support with the faster and more versatile USB 3.0 interface is what truly sets it apart from other hubs. For those looking to get the most mileage out of a single USB 3.0 port, it's a nearly perfect blend of simplicity, affordability, and portability. Its requiring an external power source to fully function is inconvenient, but the Satechi 3.0 is nonetheless a fine choice for anyone in the market looking to expand their connectivity options.

Setting up the Satechi 3.0 is incredibly straightforward. Simply plug it in to one of your computer's USB 3.0 ports via the included USB Micro B cable and presto, you've gained four additional USB 3.0 ports. That's it?there's no cumbersome software to install, and it's compatible with Windows (98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista/7), Linux (kernel version 2.4 or later), and Mac (OS 9.1 or later). Of course, Apple's roster of USB 3.0?equipped systems is dwarfed in comparison to the number Windows has, save for a handful of systems including the latest wave of MacBook Pros and the MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) ($1,199 direct, 4 stars).

The Satechi 3.0 measures 0.5 by 3 by 2 inches (HWD), or roughly the size of a stack of ten credit cards. Because it weighs next to nothing (1.6 ounces), it can just as easily be carried around in your shirt pocket as your laptop bag without adding any noticeable heft. The compact yellow chassis is constructed primarily out of plastic, with a gray aluminum lid rounding out an overall two-tone finish. Beneath the Satechi logo on the lower-right side of the lid is an LED activity light that blinks whenever the hub is in use. Four tiny rubber pads on the hub's underside provide a grip so you don't have to worry about it sliding around and potentially unplugging your devices. Three of the USB 3.0 ports are located at the front of the hub, with the fourth located at the rear alongside a power port for the included AC adapter and a micro USB B port for connecting to your system's USB 3.0 port.

Overall, the Satechi 3.0 nicely combines form and function. When transferring our 1.22GB test folder, I noticed no performance degradation. This brings me to the hub's only real drawback: It uses an external power source. Were this not the case, it would have essentially been as portable as a flash drive. External power supplies aren't always necessary; keyboards, mice, and many single bus-powered portable hard drives don't need them, and it's feasible to charge (but not sync) most smartphones without them as well. But to take full advantage of the Satechi 3.0, a power outlet must be nearby. For the desktop-bound, this barely registers as a complaint, but those looking for something truly portable may be miffed by this shortcoming.

For users looking to expand their USB 3.0 connectivity, the Satechi 3.0 4-Port USB Hub is overall a very good choice. And at $40, it's also a solid value, boiling down to $10 per USB 3.0 port. Just be sure to have a power outlet nearby.

New Tonto, familiar feelings for Native Americans

(AP) ? Gyasi Ross grew up decades after the "Lone Ranger" aired on TV, but his friends would still call him "Tonto" when they teased him.

"Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn't seen the show, and we understood it wasn't a good thing," said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. "Why else would you tease someone with that?"

The making of a new "Lone Ranger" Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a character that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes.

The film is still in production, but Native American groups have been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and in a national Native publication running an occasional series on the topic.

Some Native Americans welcome the new movie, slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe's support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member.

But for others, the "Lone Ranger" represents a lingering sore spot ? one that goes back to the 1950s television version of Tonto, who spoke in broken English, wore buckskin and lacked any real cultural traits.

Depp's role attracted particular attention in April when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of the actor in his Tonto costume. He had on black and white face paint, an intense gaze, a black bird attached to his head and plenty of decorative feathers.

"The moment it hit my Facebook newsfeed, the updates from my friends went nutso," wrote Natanya Ann Pulley, a doctorate student at University of Utah, in an essay for the online magazine McSweeney's.

For Pulley and her friends, the portrayal of Native Americans in Western movies is getting old.

"I'm worried about the Tonto figure becoming a parody or a commercialized figure that doesn't have any dimension or depth, or consideration for contemporary context of Native Americans," she said.

But Native Americans are far from a monolithic group, and many are opening their arms to the new movie. Some are just excited to see Depp take the role.

In New Mexico, where some of the movie was filmed, the Navajo presented Depp, his co-star Armie Hammer, director Gore Verbinski and Bruckheimer with Pendleton blankets to welcome them to their land. Elsewhere, the Comanche people of Oklahoma made Depp, one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, an honorary member.

"In my niece's mind, I met Jack Sparrow," said Emerald Dahozy, spokeswoman for Navajo President Ben Shelly and a member of the Navajo group who met with Depp. "My personal view, I like him playing in a character which he can embody well."

Dahozy said the "Lone Ranger" production brought something more palpable to the reservation: money. The actors and the large crew lived on Navajo land, eating at local restaurants and staying in towns that rely heavily on tourism.

American Indians aren't the only ones conflicted about the character of Tonto, which means "dumb" in Spanish. For Mexican Americans who grew up in the Southwest, the character draws up memories of one of the first dark-skinned heroes in popular culture and anger over a white man calling a brown-skinned person "dumb," said Rosa-Linda Fregoso, author of "Bronze Screen: Chicana and Chicano Film Culture" and a Latino Studies professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

"I remember rooting for him as a kid, but even I was a little bit offended as a child," said Fregoso. "For a grown white man to call someone 'Tonto' meant that you were less than human, not fully human or childlike."

In fact, Tonto's character has historically been called "Toro," which means "bull," in Spanish-language versions of early films, and Spanish language stories about Depp's role in the new film refers to his character as "Toro."

Disney representatives declined to comment, but Depp has said the film will be a "sort of rock 'n' roll version of the Lone Ranger" with his Tonto offering a different take from the 1950s show.

Cheyenne and Arapaho filmmaker Chris Eyre is willing to give the actor a chance.

"Based on Johnny Depp as an artist, and him going all the way and making this film happen, in my book (he) deserves some credit," Eyre told Indian Country Today for its occasional "Tonto Files" series. "He wants to change the view of Tonto, and he put his reputation and his career on the line."

The "Lone Ranger" began on the radio in the 1930s. Tonto was played by an actor of Irish descent, according to the Lone Ranger Fan Club.

The show rocketed in popularity and made a seamless transition to television, running on ABC from 1949 to 1957. In 2003, a TV reboot flopped. That version featured a First Peoples actor from Canada playing Tonto.

But the 1950s portrayal of Tonto by Jay Silverheels, a Canadian Mohawk First Nations member, is by far the most recognized.

He spoke in pidgin and was the loyal partner of the crime-fighting ranger, often bailing out the masked avenger from treacherous situations.

"Here hat. Me wash in stream. Dry in sun. Make whiter," Tonto says in an early episode setting up his relationship with the Lone Ranger. "Here gun to kill bad men."

That Tonto has been criticized as being generic and subordinate ? a character with no individuality and no life beyond helping the Lone Ranger.

Tex Holland, executive director of the 600-member Lone Ranger Fan Club, defended the portrayal.

"I felt the Indians had their own language and in doing so, anyone learning the language is going to speak it broken, whether the person is from Japan or Mexico," Holland said. "I did not look down on him. All of us thought that's the way the Indians at that time communicated with us. Did we speak Indian fluently? We'd speak it broken it too."

Holland and his fellow fans, however, were taken aback by Depp's new look.

"Yuck. I can't believe that he's wearing a crow on his head. And he's looking like some type of medicine man," Holland said. "Disney chose (Depp) for one thing: box office draw."

Reportedly costing more than $200 million, plus yet-to-be-added marketing costs, Disney's "Lone Ranger" is the type of film that can make or break a studio's summer. It's already been plagued with budget woes. The movie's release date in 2013 was recently pushed back a month.

Having Depp in the cast assures more eyeballs will be on the screen. Depp led the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and anchored "Alice in Wonderland." Three of those movies surpassed the rare billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office.

Back on Suquamish land, Ross doesn't mind having Depp as Tonto. In fact, the 36-year-old said he would have been more troubled had a Native American taken the role, knowing its history.

But he's worried the movie, which certainly will attract a large audience, will cement a stereotype for years to come because Hollywood doesn't make many movies with Native American protagonists. The popular ones stick in people's minds.

The first "Lone Ranger" did that, as did "Dances with Wolves" decades later, said Ross, an attorney who also writes a column for Indian Country Today.

"I'm not sure how much redefining I'm going to expect, not sure how much of the movie will be something I can show my son," he said.

Book Review: NYC Rental Bible | My First Apartment

When I was asked to review the new ebook, NYC Rental Bible, it felt like a familiar assignment; I?m well acquainted with informational booklets. This because, at every stage of my life, my father has given me a book on how to do that which I am about to do: a book on how to study, how to drive a car, how to write a college essay, how to manage money, how to purchase a condo, and so forth. I think, on some level, these gifts make us both feel a little better: he feels more confident in my future decisions, while I, despite my grumbling, usually read the book, since I know that it?ll provide an overview of the issues at hand, it?s usually eminently browse-able, and it just might help me avoid an embarrassing beginner?s mistake.

And so this is how I approached NYC Rental Bible: A Compilation of Real Estate Secrets from Top NYC Brokers. It should give a good outline of the process of finding a rental in NYC, and a few insights to a total novice. And, since New York real estate is a universe unto its own, if you want a general I?m-in-any-city-looking-for-an-apartment advice, you shouldn?t expect to get it here. Instead, the NYC Rental Bible would be focused exclusively on the specifics of New York City apartment hunting.

?.Except that one of the first things I noticed is that the book ignores one of the most common ways that twenty-somethings find apartments in New York, which is via a ?share.? A ?share? simply means you?re a person looking to move into a two-, three-, or four-bedroom apartment, but you don?t have roommates to move in with you ? you?d rather move into an already established place, taking one individual?s spot, while the other present renters stay and you become their new roommate. Trying to navigate this fascinating, woolly world is a wonder unto itself ?? and it?s also one of the cheapest, easiest ways to find a place in New York. But, because brokers have a vested interest in you not doing this, since it provides them with no commission, it?s not even mentioned the NYC Rental Bible, which was a little disappointing, though somewhat understandable.

Another telling error: in the breakdown of different apartment configurations common in New York City, the much-hated railroad apartment is conspicuously absent. How could this be?? However, in terms of misses, the book?s glossary takes the cake. Usually a glossary is a prime reason to purchase a how-to, reference-type book when starting something new, since it lets you quickly and easily study-up on jargon. However, if you buy NYC Rental Bible for the glossary, the joke?s on you: the ?glossary? only has three entries. Yes, that?s right: three. They are: ?exclusive listing,? ?limited listing,? and ?open listing?. ? And that, ladies and gentlemen, is your glossary!

Regardless, I was ready to tepidly recommend this pamphlet-like ebook to neophytes to the New York City rental world. I figured, why not drop three or four dollars ? or maybe even eight or ten ? to get some rudimentary, sometimes-good information before you start your NYC apartment hunt? ?But then I went to the book?s webpage and saw the actual asking amount: $39.00!? ?Holy s@*t!? I thought, ?You could go to a Death Cab for Cutie concert at that price!? Which, ultimately, is what I recommend you do: save your money for something enjoyable and check out our FREE?rental ad-speak translator to get started with your NYC rental hunt.
